Made From Scratch — Restaurant in Wilson

We found this place much the same way others find it. We saw their billboards while traveling down I-70. We are always on the lookout for good chicken fried steak and decided a place called Made from Scratch was worth a try. We made a mistake.

This review is more about the service than the food - we never got any before deciding we had waited long enough. We got there about 5:30 PM on a Sunday. There were maybe half a dozen others there when we got there. We spent about 15 minutes deciding that we were going to have the chicken fried steak. They were out of it. We ended up ordering a burger, chicken strips and some fries among our table.

Then we waited and waited and waited. Finally at 6:45 PM we had had enough and were ready to get back on the road with some restless kids. We still had a 3 hour drive ahead of us. We were pretty sure our order was the next one, but we had been there way to long. The entire hour plus we were there we saw two other tables get served.

I informed the only waitress there that we had waited long enough and needed to go. She tried to tell us they were working our order. I handed her my credit card and said sorry but it was time for us to go. I told her to charge us whatever they felt they needed to, but that we needed to leave. Much to my surprise she ran my card and told me it was going to be $28 dollars and change (for me, my wife and two kids splitting a kids meal). As I signed my receipt to leave I shared my disbelief with the waitress that they were going to charge me that much. Instead of an I'm sorry, she proceeded to inform me that at least she didn't charge us for the drinks. The only thing we were served our entire hour plus there, she gave us for free.

I guess the apologies for the lengthy service were reserved for those that actually were able to endure the full brunt of it and not for those passing through that really wanted to get to their destination before dark.

Extremely slow and inattentive. I agree with another review that locals are treated better. We arrived at 10:15. All empty tables were dirty. The waitress cleaned other tables before coming to ours. Sat for 10 minutes waiting to have our order taken. We could see the kitchen from our table, and our food was not started until 10:50. The staff was more focused on preparing the buffet than taking care of customers. We never received our check. Three of us had to wait to pay while staff was straightening coffee cups, walking around, basically ignoring the counter. We ordered the chicken strips and homemade chips to go and didn't realize until we were down the road that they failed to give us our chips. When I called back to see if they would refund part of the charge back to my card, I was told the price of the chicken strips was the same whether it came with chips or not.

We were also told when ordering that they were out of hash browns but would substitute the hash browns for French toast. When the food arrived, we had a small portion of hash browns and were told that because they did have some hash browns, we would no longer be receiving the substitution of the French toast...... Which at that point we were kind of looking forward to.

After floating around on the lake as a human popsicle and getting skunked on the fishing after 11 hours, I needed something delicious to warm me up.

We wondered into Made From Scratch and were greeted by one of the sweetest waitresses I have ever had. I asked a few questions about the menu and was informed that they had their German buffet. I was starving so I proceeded with the buffet AND ordered 1/2 order of biscuits and gravy.

I dug in to my bierock, sausages, mashed potatoes, sausage soup (no clue what it is called but it was amazing) and noddle thing. It was all absolutely wonderful. Then the biscuits and gravy found the table.

The biscuits were super light and fluffy with delicious gravy and plenty of chunks of sausage.
