Traveling through the back roads and small towns of America, you discover hidden gems and amazing places that you will never find on an Interstate. Today we found one such place in Wilton, Iowa when we stumbled upon Wilton Candy Kitchen, an operating turn of the century soda fountain and ice cream parlor. To say it was amazing would be an understatement. The cherry Coke was homemade, the ice cream expertly crafted, and the chocolate fluffernut sandwich was childhood rediscovered. Then there were the owners. Amazing people with an amazing story to tell. People who you can talk to for an hour and it seems like a minute. Do yourself a favor and abandon the Interstate, find those back roads, grab a home made cherry Coke and discover places like Wilton and historic soda foundations like Wilton Candy Kitchen.

This is one of the most special places to me. I hadn’t been here in nine or ten years. I finally got to come back and it was just as good as it used to be. So many memories of coming here in the summers with my grandparents. So glad that in a crazy world, there are still some good things that never change. The ice cream is perfect as always. The strawberry ice cream soda is tasteful and refreshing without feeling too rich. Many other great flavors. So glad that this place full of childhood memories for me is still alive, and that people can still experience just how special Wilton Candy Kitchen is. ❤️ The people who work here are very sweet. This is worth stopping in Wilton not only for great ice cream, but also for a great experience.

I was in the area for work. This place popped up as a suggestion. I am so glad I stopped! The owners are so very nice. Could talk for hours. The history in this place is so remarkable. A lot of cool things to see in their small museum in the back. I tried a vanilla orange Coke, way better than the new orange Coke. Smoother. I ate a chicken salad sandwich and got an ice cream cone. Not just any ice-cream. House made blueberry 🫐 ice cream! SO DELICIOUS! Way better than huckleberry, which they do have if you’re interested. If you are in the area, definitely stop by, you won’t regret it. I can’t wait to go back. -Greg

This place is loaded with charm and whimsy! There aren’t many of this historic soda shops around. I highly recommend stopping in. You won’t regret it. You will be transported in time. Try a chocolate malt with banana or an orange creamsicle ice cream float. The options are only limited by your imagination for malts and shakes and floats. Or… it’s get a scoop of your favorite ice cream flavor. They have a few sandwich options as well, but this place is all about the ice cream experience! And, it’s a great one!

In eastern Iowa and looking for a quick weekend or an afternoon/evening summer destination with a group of friends or family to have a fun experience? It’s...
