The caboose is interesting to climb on and peek inside. The rail trail is the main draw. We only went one direction and incredible veiws of nature on both sides. Rocks hewn through with 🌲 trees growing on top. Quite a few chipmunks. We heard geese honking. You are elevated above Flatrock Brook. With the fall foliage, it's a great walk. Even my daughter smiled. There are a few paths to the brook and a few that lead into the forest. It's also a bike path. Well maintained paved trail. Two porta potties at the train station. 🚆 Train station is closed. Limited parking. Place is popular! We're going back! I recommend a visit if you want to go for a scenic walk. Thanks to Christina Levitan for her review:)! Update: Sunday afternoon, November 2020; We walked the direction where the caboose is and crossed two roads. North Lowell Rd speed limit is 40 MPH. A sign said the direction we were going was a dead end. After a half hour, we still didn't see it. A little less scenic since you are next to private property and the highway, but, still a nice walk with benches along the way. Update: October 2025; Very scenic with the sunset. We noticed a beaver 🦫 dwelling and 🦆 ducks. There is a rock 🪨 dam...
Read moreWe own a vacation home in Windham. I have visited the Windham Rail Trail only a handful of times, and it is a beautiful walk through nature. I have 2 obedient German Shepherds and occasionally allow them off leash for some extra exercise. When I see a biker, walker, or runner I will bring them into heel or put them on the leash. I have received many complements on how obedient they are.
I did have one very bad experience there. There was a gentleman that was riding a bike that clearly believes that he can control who is using the trail and how they are using it. It also seems to me that he either is afraid of dogs or just flat out hates them, because he stopped and verbally accosted me in an extremely threatening manner! It seems that even though my dogs never broke heel (even when he was behaving in an aggressive manner towards me) it was not enough for him.
He is an older gentleman maybe in his 60's with white hair and a white beard.
I hope that, something will be done and this man will not be allowed to attack anyone else. I do believe he could become physically violent...
Read moreMost of the trail is uninterrupted by road crossings. The train station is still there as well as one train. All but one small section (about 6 feet long) is paved. The trail goes over a historic cow tunnel that has a historic marker. The trail passes by at least 4 ponds. There are a few short marked off road trails that go down to the different ponds and can be hiked or mountain biked. The off road trails have lots of leaf litter so be careful running the trails as roots and rocks are hidden. In summer the horseflys and mosquitoes come out in force near the ponds as the sun sets. For fauna I saw several chipmunks, squirrels and birds including a great blue heron. For flora there are oak trees, maple trees, white pines, white birch, ferns, wild blueberry bushes and wild flowers. The ponds have lilly pads and flowers. The trail does not change much in elevation making it...
