Great food with horrible customer service. My wife and I were excited to try this place out for the first time as we are new to town. Upon ordering I mentioned a tomato allergy to the cashier and she proceeded with placing our order. Our first two items were Italian wedding soup bowls which we took outside while we waited for the rest of our order.
When I opened the lid to the soup I noticed it was a tomato broth. I brought the soup back in and was greeted by Kay, the owner. I told Kay that I mentioned I was allergic to tomatoes and that the cashier did not mention anything about the Italian wedding soup (which I have never seen with tomato product until this experience). Kay looked at me and said, “Is their someone you can take this home to?” Surprised by her question, I said (truthfully) that I will be running errands throughout the day and will not be home for some time.
Kay then said, “So you don’t make Italian wedding soup with tomato product in it?” Surprised yet again by Kay’s response, I kindly said “No, this is the first time I have ever seen tomato product in this kind of soup.” Kay then said, “well it looks like you opened it, so I guess I will eat it.” I then said “well, I am really hungry and would not mind if you substituted the soup with something else.” Kay replied, “so, you really have never put tomato product in Italian wedding soup?”
Sensing that Kay was getting aggravated by the situation and several other customers were standing behind me, I said, “I have not, and I do not want to cause an argument in front of your customers about this.” I then said, “again, I am hungry and would not mind if you substituted the soup for something. Kay then pointed toward some pastries and a fruit cup section and told me if I wanted a fruit cup “it would be a $1 up-charge.” At this point I thought Kay might be messing with me, and I said, “so you would really up-charge me for a fruit cup in this situation?” Kay quickly replied, “yes!”
It was at this point I asked Kay for her name (as up to then I had no idea who she was). She quickly replied with a question, which was “what is your name?” I gave her my name and then asked again for hers, and she finally told me, and that she was the owner! I then said I will be giving her the $1 for the fruit cup, and that I tipped her cashier for my original order - to which Kay replied, “thanks, my staff will appreciate that,” and I proceeded to tell her I will be writing a review. She then replied with, “wow!” Upon getting our lunch order which consisted of wraps I was fortunate to not have any tomatoes. The wraps were very good, but unfortunately Kay’s handling of the soup situation left, well, a bad taste in my mouth.
Kay, a simple recommendation on how to handle these types of situations moving forward. “Sir, I am sorry you got a soup with tomato product.” “Can I get you something else while the rest of your order is being prepared?” “Oh, you want a fruit cup, no problem, please take one”. “And I will see to it that the rest of your order is quickly...
Read moreGot the "hungry boy" breakfast and they call it that because boy you're going to be hungry after, and they ridiculously took $11 for it which was actually $2 more than what it said on the printed menu. Tiny pile of potatoes, three very thin slices of bacon, 2 eggs....I've gotten three eggs, way more potatoes, and better bacon for less money before at other places Potatoes were undercooked, low quality bacon was overcooked, they couldn't even be bothered to cut your toast in half, never gave ketchup or asked if you wanted it. I asked who makes their coffee, which they sell by the bag in their own bags so you can't tell who makes it. The lady "didn't know." Hmmm. I noticed there was a whole essay above the coffee urns talking about free trade coffee from a collaborative but they interestingly covered it up with bags of coffee. It tasted like Folgers. I've seen this before where they put the product in their own containers so you don't know it's cheap quality and then sell it at a much higher price. Desserts aren't homemade but mass produced (lady said she didn't know who makes those either), but I saw the box said Encore). There was a chain in front of the gift shop saying it opens at 8 and it was already 8:30. This place is obviously shoddily run and a ripoff, $11 for that tiny, low quality breakfast was absolutely ridiculous. I do...
Read moreIt has been some time, since my visit, but I was very happy with the pastrami sandwich and cup of coffee I got, for lunch. I was raised in this neighborhood but moved to Los Angeles, California, for college, in 1987, and was, unfortunately, unaware of this establishment’s existence for awhile. When I next return home, I fully intend to visit, again. In California( now, the San Francisco Bay Area), a good pastrami sandwich is not always easy to find, and it’s a true treat, to return to the area where I rode my bicycle, in my youth, and grab a delicious bite to eat. The Left Coast will never compare, in that regard. I also cherish the “Live Free or Die” baseball cap I purchased, from the store, and have received many comments of admiration, from passers by, probably unaware that the man first writing that phrase, 1809,was born a stone’s throw away from the birthplace of...
