It was an okay forest preserve. We had fun and there were plenty of trails for biking and hiking but when I think of a forest preserve I think of a massive amount of dense trees. Most of our hiking was on a rock path in sunlight (yes, I enjoyed myself) it's a Nice area to enjoy the day but not the very wooded area I was hoping. If I'm going to a forest I want to be immersed in trees. There was a historic barn and house which wasn't tour able but a photo op. There were other trails we did not embark but from the road view it seemed the other trails were also not in the woods. Finally, there is a dog park, and rumor has it you need a permit to have your dog “off leash” at the park.

The miles of trails at this Forest Preserve are great for hiking, running, or biking. I hiked 7 miles of trails, and there's still other trails to explore. The preserve features a mix of wooded areas with beautiful oaks, and prairies, and meadows. The DuPage County Forest Preserve District does a phenomenal job of maintaining their forest preserves, trails, and facilities and Greene Valley is no different. The trails are wide, crushed limestone, in great shape. Trail markers and signage are present through the Preserve. There's multiple parking lots and bathrooms available.

Great place for walks, runs, and other trail activities. Main loop trail is a little under 3 miles, and there are a couple other trails that you can mix and match together. The main loop goes in and out of forest and open grass, with some gentle elevation change throughout. The Thunderbird parking lot (west side, off of 79th St) is usually less crowded than the South lot off of Greene, but neither gets too full most of the time.

Very nice people who go here, haven't had a problem with any other dog, and no one runs away from my little pitbull which is a great thing to see as people judge him for his breed. There are a ton of bugs however so I strongly recommend using bug spray before you go.

The reason why this place gets a 3 out of 5 is because of the car break in's during daylight. There's enough rangers around to fine people for not having their permits on them but not enough to make sure people aren't breaking into cars in their parking lot?! That's ridiculous and they haven't done much about it except send out an email telling people to keep valuables out of your case just in case it happens to you... That's not ok. They should increase patrol there it just focus patrol there until the people are apprehended or...

I am most grateful for the habitat restoration in McDowell Grove County Forest Preserve, especially restoring it to the clean, free-flowing river that it was back when Illinois was still a wild frontier. Still, I wish you would remove the stakes, and wire, left in the river and along its riverbanks as they are an eyesore and a health and safety hazard to the local wildlife. I have photos of white-tailed deer wading through the river and browsing on its shores that would normally be great photos expressing McDowell's natural beauty. But the stakes and wiring subtract from the photos substantially! Do we really need to have those stakes, and wiring there, now that the river has...
