Read moreWhile the Ecotarium isn't the same one as years ago (or so I've been told from the lack of a Polar Bear), I think that what is represented today is a much more environmentally conscious display of the local and foreign wildlife and efforts on our parts to be more caring for our world.
I come here just once a year at this point to help support the facility and I am always pleased whenever I do - there's so much here to explore. Though I see much more of a purpose with this place for serving and entertaining families, it's still a fairly decent visit as a young adult who is enthusiastic to learn and explore native and exotic species of animals, plants, and geology from all over the world.
I think there's so much that they do right here - from intricate museum and taxidermy displays of African species, with these murals and displays on par with New York City's Natural History Museum, to some very good local critter habitats and exhibits. I do wish that the outdoor trails and exhibits had just a little bit more though - it always feels like there's nothing leading up to the Cougar habitat in the back. They have the interior nearly worked to a T - it's always so full to the brim with stuff to learn about and families enjoying the exhibits. I just hope that Ecotarium continues to refurbish and improve upon the outdoor trails - new species aren't even required, having more education or colorful, interactive signage just talking about the local wildlife, biodiversity, and more would go such a long way to improving the outdoor areas and make them truly worth visiting.
In terms of animal husbandry, this place does a great job in taking care of exactly what they're able to. Some stand-out species are clearly the Cougars in their incredible habitat. While nowadays it would be abysmal for Polar Bears, this stands as one of the best Cougar habitats I have ever seen - tons of areas for them to explore, climb, and rest. Other great habitats or exhibits here are the Owl Aviary, the North American Otter habitat as well as the Bald Eagle aviary.
I'm very excited to see what the new improvements they were working on entail - wishing the best for this incredible institution, certainly one of the, if not, the best animal and environmental facility in Central...
