Las Grutas is a great spot in Punta. There is a main 3km long beach, and two tiny beaches next to the main one. Sand is thick and the sea is usually rough with big waves and the fact that the water turns deep very fast. Water temperature is usually refreshing, not too cold not too warm. There is a lifeguard on duty and restrooms in the simple restaurant there is on the beach. There's also 30m cliff walls to do some rock climbing and a very big cave that used to be a boite/discotheque although it has trash and it is dirty inside it is fun to visit, remains of a bar, DJ cabin and dancefloor can be seen. There is also a staircase nearby -difficult to see because its camouflaged, so ask someone around- that will take you on top of the La Ballena where you can access some privilaged views to Bahía de Maldonado, Isla De Gorriti, Punta del Este, Isla de Lobos, also do or watch some paragliding and hanggliding activity on windy days, or take a walk on a footpath that goes along the cliffs. Nearby there is the viewpoint of Punta Ballena with local artisan shops that sell bracelets, necklesses, shells of all sorts as well as many other things. On the other side of La Ballena you can see a wonderfull view of Bahía de Portezuelo, with the Mt. Pan de Azucar on the horizon and other local sierras as well as Solanas Beach. Finally from here you can see incredible sunsets because the sun sets right in the ocean (during summer at least) it can be seen from the rocks close by or in Casapueblo, a local museum and boutique hotel that used to be the home and masterpiece work of local artist Carlos Páez Vilaró. The place has a café. There are some rocks in La Ballena wich are used to jump and dive into the sea for fun, but you' have to ask around to find the right rocks because it is dangerous activity of not well...
