Hazrati Imam Mosque.
At the heart Hazrat Iman Square is the Hazrat Iman Mosque, which was constructed in just four months in 2007 on the instruction of President Karimov. The largest mosque in the city was an expensive undertaking: the sandalwood columns came from India, the dark green marble is Turkish, and the interior of the blue-tiled domes is decorated with genuine gold leaf.
The Khazrati Imam Mosque is one of the most important religious and architectural landmarks in Tashkent. The mosque is named after Imam Abu Bakr Muhammad al-Kaffal al-Shashi, a 10th-century Islamic scholar, poet, and philosopher, whose mausoleum is located within the complex. He was born in 903 in Tashkent, in the family of a lock manufacturer. Hence, this is where his nickname came, “Kaffal” – “lock”.
The current Khazrati Imam Mosque was constructed in traditional Islamic style, with two minarets, a large central blue dome, and a spacious marble courtyard, and is part of the larger Khazrati Imam Complex.
