A nice mountain pass, easily to travel on a scooter or motorcycle (or car). I see some reviews stating you should get a semi automatic or manual but we breezed through with a scooter, it’s really no big deal. The road is calm, as all traffic travels through the toll-roads (much quicker). You’ll only encounter other tourists or petroleum-trucks and cattle transports (too smelly to go through the tunnels, apparently - the actually hose down the trucks halfway through and at the end, check out the water systems while you’re there). The road shows some nice views of Da Nang and the valley, so it is a nice trip, sure. What isn’t nice is when you travel from Hue to say, Da Nang or Hoi An, the road before and after the Hai Van pass. Those long stretches of road are uneventful and pretty lame. I recommend this pass if you are in the neighbourhood or if you are travelling on motorcycle as is, going out of your way for it on a basic tourist trip is not truly worth it in my opinion. On a side note, there is an other trail through the pass, which is a lot crazier. This trail does require some skill and a manual motorcycle. It shows similar epic views but with added adrenaline. EDIT: I seem to have misunderstood, the alternative trail is a trail around Saigon somewhere. Not through the Hai Van pass. You can stray from the main road through the pass though if you’re looking to spice it up (...

Worth the visit everytime I come back. I have been here since I was little but I always come back here every year. The view is still the same, cool and relaxing. Just take the bike and ride slowly to enjoy the scenic panorama view of Lang Co from Hue and Son Tra Peninsula of Da Nang. Sometimes you can see fog and cloud climbing up from mountains to mountains. When you go to the top of Hai Van, where the border of Thua Thien Hue- Da Nang, there are plenty of coffee shops where you can enjoy your hot cup of coffee while watching the clouds surrounding you. Prepare yourself with a poncho in case the Hue or Da Nang side have little cold rain. And also be careful when you ride in the rainy day as road is little slippery and it can be dangerous when going down the pass. Should have a goggles or glasses if you dont wanna catch insect flying to your face (there are tons when its...

The Hải Vân Pass crosses over a spur of the Trường Sơn (Annamite) Range that emerges from the west and juts into the South China Sea, forming the Hải Vân Peninsula and the adjoining Son Tra Island. The pass, which once formed the boundary between the kingdoms of Đại Việt and Champa, also forms a boundary between the climates of northern and southern Vietnam, sheltering the city of Da Nang from the "Chinese winds" that blow in from the northwest. During the winter months (November–March), for instance, weather on the north side of the pass might be wet and cold, while the south side might be warm and dry. The pass is renowned for its scenic beauty.Presenter Jeremy Clarkson, host of the BBC motoring programme Top Gear, featured the pass during the show's 2008 Vietnam Special, calling the road "a deserted ribbon of perfection—one of the best coast roads...

We absolutely recommend passing the Hai Van Pass. If you want to do it by motorbike that is fine too but we took a company that made the transfer for you between Hoi An and Hue (they can do it also viceversa) by car and that makes stops along the way (Marble Mountains, Lady Buddha, An Bang Cemetery and lunch, etc) and we had a lovely day. Took off at 9h00 and we were at our hotel in Hue at around 16-17h00. A little bit pricier (with regards to Vietnamese prices), but with them (huefriendlycars) we were able to transfer from one city to another without loosing a night, sightseeing different places (Hai Van Pass included!) and also have a lovely lunch. And the driver is very kind and gives you some indications along the way. And if you want to pass it by motorbike that is fine too.
