It traverses the larger Annamite Range that juts into the South China Sea on the border of Danang and Hue and is recognized as one of the world's top ten most beautiful coastal roads. This pass relates to numerous historical events in Vietnam and has been a key pass to any ground army attempting to move between the country's northern and central areas. It was known as the 'Street Without Joy' by the Americans during the Vietnam War due to the danger and devastation it caused to the heavily war-torn cities of Hue and Da Nang. In May 1968, a five-day rescue operation involved heavy fighting with the North Vietnamese Army to save an encircled and embattled Marine patrol took place at the Hai Van Pass resulted in heavy casualties and losses. I travelled this pass on 25 August 2025 in the comfort of an air-conditioned vehicle. There was a clear blue sky, the deep blue sea, superb mountain scenery, and perfect companionship of my friends.
