Went on the blue penguin tour early September. It's only available in the evening. Its a bit of a drive from Dunedin. The road can get very windy. Arrived early so we checked out the gift shop until the tour started. The gift shop was closed when the tour ended, so best buy any gifts before the tour starts. There was a short and very informative presentation from the guides to kick off the tour. the group was then escorted down to the beach. Quite a few stairs to go down. It was dark but the path was well lit. It was also cold and very windy so warm clothing is a must. We all waited on a deck for the penguins to come out. We didn't have to wait long until groups of penguins started coming out of the Ocean and up the beach. They were very vocal and didn't seem to mind the large group of people near them. Quite a few came up to deck and you're able to get a good look at them. We were treated to a free bikkie while watching. The guides were great and passionate about their work. It was an amazing experience. Worth it.

Don’t come here thinking that you will see an albatross up close. You won’t! Upon arrival, we were almost incapacitated by the overwhelming stench of bird shit. That is because this place is also home to thousands of annoying red gulls (we call them seagulls in the U.S.). Bird shit is literally everywhere. Walkways, carpark, you get the idea… Tour starts with a short movie and then you walk out to a viewing area. Not open air, there is a glass partition. Right now there are 4 pairs of nesting birds. Albatrosses are a minimum of 50 meters away so you cannot get a good look at them. Yes they swoop and glide around, but not near where everyone is standing. Overall it was a bit disappointing. I will say that our guide did a decent job. One thing I liked is the optional jackets that guests can wear during the tour to protect themselves from live guano bombs. After the tour, I asked a male employee where we can return our jackets. Dude gives us a puzzled clueless look and says “Uhh, did you get those here? I don’t know?” WOW. Employees at the very front need to do a better job of instructing people where to check in for the tour. I stood just inside the door for five minutes and multiple female staff members ignored me. Finally I asked for help and they directed me around the corner. Pathetic!

My friend and I visited the Royal Albatross Centre while we were in Dunedin. I had visited over a decade ago as a kid so I wanted to come back again as an adult. I had a banana milkshake at the café and it was great value for money. The staff were happy to swap in soy milk so I didn't have to have as much Lacteez to enjoy it. We chose to do the express tours they were running because of the school holidays, and even though it was intended for the school holidays, we still felt like it was plenty of time. It was really reasonably priced too. The tour guide was knowledgeable and approachable, and she didn't hurry us around the viewing deck. We were lucky enough to see four albatross chicks and even saw an adult albatross in flight. The viewing deck had plenty of space for a decent sized group, and plenty of binoculars for getting a good close-up on the chicks. The centre also had a fantastic gift shop. I was very glad to see plenty of Happy Hens available for purchase.

A very scenic drive along the coastline to reach the centre. Lots of sea gulls and a few chicks around the centre and you may find a few royal albatross flying around too. Didn't pay to join the tour to look at the albatross nesting behind the fenced perimeter, as the pricing is a bit steep. There are a few guided tours to choose from e.g. royal albatross, little blue penguin and Fort Taiaroa, ranging from 60 to 90 minutes, which include viewing of videos, and a short walk behind the centre. There are a souvenir shop and an Albatross café in the centre, which also has easy to read information panels for the public. The view around the centre is beautiful and there are two short tracks that can be accessed from the carpark. One leads down the slope to a beach, and one leads to the side of the centre to view the cliff, where you can see birds perched at the cliff and NZ furseals lazing at the rocks beneath the cliff or swimming leisurely and snacking on the sea grass.

Choose a time to go when there is a wind blowing so that you can see some Albatross flying. They need the wind to take off and soar. There is a large carpark, you can park there for free and you may be lucky to see an Albatross flying over the headland. Initially we did not. You should see other birds and of course some fur seals. The centre is a short walk up from the carpark. Here you can buy souvenirs and look at their exhibits and grab a coffee at their restaurant. We booked a tour to go out on to the headland to the hide. This is quite expensive, but as there were some chicks about we thought it was worthwhile. We spent long enough in the hide to see some soaring albatross and four chicks who did move about for us. While at the hide the guide gives you a commentary about the Royal Albatross and other birds in the area. After we left and standing in the carpark, we did spot a Royal Albatross flying over the headland.

Well worth the money. I highly recommend going for the 90 minute tour which includes the fort exploration. Time went by with quickly. April is a great time to visit because the babies are so cute and fluffy plus you get to see majestic big Albatross flying too. The gift shop has excellent penguin and Albatross items .Staff were friendly. It gets windy so bring a coat ,hat and maybe scarf. The drive from the cbd takes 40 minutes but there's often roadworks or bad weather so allow one hour to get there. If you arrive early no worries there's so much to see in the visitor center plus a cafe.I recommend as well get a Peninsula trust membership as you get free entry with a friend or 40% if going alone plus 20% off a gift shop 😀. Looking forward to coming back to watch the chick's development
