Title: A Memorable Stay at Tidal River Campground, Wilson's Promontory – A Detailed Review
I recently had the pleasure of staying at Tidal River Campground, located in the heart of Wilson’s Promontory National Park, and I must say, it was an experience that truly exceeded my expectations. Tidal River is a hub for visitors exploring the park, offering an incredible base to immerse yourself in nature, enjoy the surrounding landscapes, and relax in a peaceful, family-friendly environment. Over the course of my stay, I was able to explore various aspects of the campground and the surrounding area, and I thought I would share my detailed review to help future campers make the most of their time here.
Location and Scenic Beauty: A Nature Lover's Dream
One of the most striking aspects of Tidal River Campground is its location. Nestled on the edge of the river with a view of the picturesque Wilsons Promontory coastline, the campground is beautifully positioned within the national park. The surrounding environment is nothing short of stunning, with towering mountains, thick forests, and the serene Tidal River offering a tranquil atmosphere. You feel as though you’re completely immersed in nature the moment you arrive, with the constant sound of waves crashing in the distance, birds chirping, and the gentle rustle of trees in the breeze.
It’s also worth noting that the campground is just a short distance from some of the park’s most famous landmarks, such as Squeaky Beach, the Mount Oberon Summit, and Norman Beach. If you’re an avid hiker or nature enthusiast, the location makes it incredibly easy to access the park’s many trails, making it the perfect spot to base yourself for a few days of exploration.
The Campground Layout and Amenities: Well-Equipped and Comfortable
Tidal River Campground is one of the largest campgrounds in the park, offering a variety of accommodation options to suit different preferences. Whether you're into traditional tent camping, staying in a caravan, or renting a cabin, there is something for everyone here. There are approximately 480 campsites spread out in a relatively spacious layout, ensuring that even during peak season, it doesn’t feel overcrowded. The sites are carefully organized, allowing for privacy between campers and making it easy to relax in your space.
The sites themselves are generally level, with good access to basic facilities like picnic tables, fire pits (depending on the season and fire restrictions), and BBQ areas. For those with tents, many sites are shaded by tall trees, providing some welcome relief from the sun during the warmer months. The proximity to the river means that some campsites offer excellent views, making it a peaceful spot to sit back and enjoy nature.
The park itself is meticulously maintained, and the staff at Tidal River take great care in ensuring the area remains clean and welcoming. There are clearly marked paths and easy access to shared facilities like toilets, showers, and drinking water stations, which are all kept in excellent condition. A key highlight is the cleanliness of the campground, as it’s evident that a lot of effort goes into maintaining the area, especially given the large number of visitors.
Facilities and Services: Convenience in the Wilderness
Tidal River Campground offers a wide range of facilities that add convenience to your stay, making it an excellent spot for both experienced campers and families looking for a comfortable base to explore the park. Some of the key amenities include:
General Store: The Tidal River General Store is a great resource for last-minute supplies. They stock a range of groceries, including fresh produce, snacks, canned goods, and camping essentials like firewood, fuel, and gas. If you’ve forgotten something, it’s a reliable place to grab what you need without having to...
Read moreI would give this campground 4 of 5. It is in a beautiful location. We are here at the end of June 2020.
The unpowered sites are plentiful. The powered sites are very limited. I would guess there is about 24 powered sites and they are right next to each other. Still nice though. If you come in a caravan you will have power but no water hook up and no drain point.
As far as the campground goes, it has everything you need and any minuss points are more than made up for by the beauty of the milky way at night, the animals surrounding you at every turn and the very close locality of both the beach the tidal river which are a short walk and make for astonishing scenery.
It is very cold and wet here at the moment, some of the sites have become boggy but not all. If you were camping this week, you may find a wet week.
Laundry facilities not open due to covid. This may make staying clean and dry while camping challenging. Also, I have found the reports of a hot shower to be untrue. The East block (photos included) is closest to our site and the showers are warmish after running a little. Maybe there are hotter showers in other blocks or maybe others reports are in Summer because to strip off and get under a warm shower in this freezing weather means you are either filthy or planning a very very short shower and are desperate. After three days here with a toddler, I will be desperate tomorrow and plan to shower in the warmest time of the day.
There is power points in the ladies and the family bathroom is also pretty good but no bath access at the moment.
Visitors centre stafffriendly and helpful and the shop is good. Remember no fuel here.
Very excited to be here and loving it to...
Read moreI’ve stayed here for 2 nights (9th-11th Apr 24). Picnic area,Camping area , BBQ area and toilet were really nice and look cleaned but it’s not safety 100%. I’ve been there with my best friend( 2 ladies me and my friend)
While we were sleeping in the night around3 am. Somebody tried to steal something from our tent. He put his hand get through window side of my tent. But it was lucky. I’d heard some noise and woke up suddenly and scream “who are you?” Then I woke up my friend. After that the thief he was outside still. and waited for us to fall asleep again ( I heard his steps walk around our tent). So I decided to call the police and they said they would contact someone at Tidal river service. Then i’d been waiting for 25mins. The Tidal river staffs came and told us to calm down ,gave us a contact number then they checked around because sometime it’s just our imagine. The staffs advised us to leave in the morning because the road was not safe
I’d checked and I found out that the thief cut window side’s tent and we found his footprints around our tent
Can you imagine that? what would happen with us if i’m not careful? I hope it would be more safety in the future and if put the emergency contact number around the place(contact number for tidal river service). It should be someone work on night shift there to response in urgent...
