Our family was so excited to stay here for a night on our European roadtrip. We had read the reviews and directly booked a room in the castle, not the adjoining hotel (and the lady at reception was very helpful responding to my questions on email). The castle is impressive as you drive up the hill. There isn't really anything to do but it was fine to sit at the picnic tables outside and kids played on the small playground. We skipped the local dinner at the hotel (reserve in advance, closes by 18.00. Reception is only open 9-16.00 and no one is around after that.) and walked the 10 min to the pizza restaurant which was just fine for a night (closes by 21.00). The rooms are big but have mismatched old furniture and paintings that give it a very musty, old smell. The kids had a pullout bed and we had a very creaky old bed. The bathroom is big but don't expect anything more than toilet paper..bring your own shampoo and soap... you would think for the price you would have some basic amenities but you really are paying for the castle experience, not luxury. The bummer thing was there was a small group that was talking until 23.00 in the central courtyard so it was extremely loud. And it was quite hot in the room so not the best sleep. |Breakfast the next morning was decent (reserve beforehand) with yummy breads, soft boiled eggs, meats, cheeses, jam, coffee, etc. We then walked through the 4 floors of the castle museum which was a lot of fun...there is a knight room where you can try on the helmets, hold a spear, sit on a horse, etc...the highlight for the kids. It took us about an hour and used the English translation from the reception so we could understand what each room was about. Unfortunately there weren't any tours being held due to corona but walking around was more than fine. |All in all, the family did enjoy the experience and it was worth it for 1 night. I definitely wouldn't stay there if you can only get a room in the hotel (only 9 rooms in the castle). And if you go knowing that the room experience isn't ideal than you...
Read moreAfter reading a fellow Trip Advisor's comments about Burg Lockenhaus, we just had to stay there. We were actually just going to do a trip to Bavaria to see Ludwig's castles but then decided to visit Graz, Austria to see the armory museum, actually an arsenal - the Landeszeughaus - when we thought, well, Burg Lockenhaus is only an hour and a half away towards the Hungarian border, so why not? It is filled with history and is a wonderful medieval castle that you can visit on your own, all by yourself, when you stay there. (We got there earlier - around 4 pm - so we would have plenty of time to look around at all the rooms, not knowing if they closed everything. I believe some of it does get locked up at 6 p.m., but not all, so if you are going, try to get there earlier.) The castle has several floors to nose around, including the Blood Countess's room, noted for murdering dozens of young girls, and there is also a Gothic knight's hall, and other very interesting rooms. Our suite, the Prinz Eugen suite, consisted of 4 rooms and was very well appointed and cozy. You can see the different rooms on-line. We were able to order a very nice meal from the cook in the kitchen at 5:00 and get a few beers (he leaves at 6). (The only other option is a pizza from the down below, the only restaurant down there we were told. A pizza tray for cutting was included in our room just in case we ordered one, as well as a refrigerator for any leftovers - and a kitchen sink.) Plenty of electrical outlets -- the castle was in the process of being renovated in the 1960s until the owner died unexpectedly. Staying here was one of the highlights of our trip, despite having to drive 575 kilometers back towards Bavaria...
Read moreMy husband and another couple stayed here at the end of April. We were the only guests staying within the castle walls that night. We have done a lot of travelling and have toured dozens of castles over the years, but this experience was the most amazing stay we've ever had anywhere. Although we booked a standard double room, we were given, for no additional charge, an entire suite--sitting room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom--all beautifully equipped and restored. Everything was very clean. There was a complementary bottle of local wine in the fridge and a Nespresso machine and supplies. There is a restaurant at the castle hotel, which stayed open so we could eat dinner there. We had an outstanding meal, with drinks, main course and desserts for a very inexpensive price. The following morning we had a full breakfast cooked fresh for us. And best of all, we had this entire amazing castle at our disposal. We wandered around the entire thing on our own for as long as we wished. Admission to it was included in the reasonable price of our stay. The photos I've posted say it all. If you are looking for a reasonably-priced, authentic castle stay, you must come to this place. They told us that they don't get many foreign tourists, so this is truly a hidden gem! (By the way, this place has a very interesting--and quite bloody history, which you will want to read up on before you visit. In addition, if interested in the Knights Templar, you will find the markings in this castle...
