I am hoping that now having taken two weeks to let our disappointment settle, I will be able to give a less emotional review of Waer Waters.
My partner bought a BLOOM package, worth 145 euro per person, at least 2 weeks prior to our visit. You leave your money in the trust of a recommended wellness resort to diligently organize your experience. We were there as a gift for my birthday, and so the only goal for our evening at Waer Waters was that we spent in together.
Upon arrival at 1900, we were greeted by Sam Reniers. We learnt our massages were not scheduled to happen at the same hour. Sam said he would look into seeing if it could be rescheduled for the same time, unfortunately that was not possible. We were willing to go ahead until we asked about the hours of the buffet (that was included in our package). Learning that we would not be able to eat together either – since the 45min massages were scheduled at 1930 and 2030 respectively and the buffet was no longer available after 2100 – we asked if we could come back another day since two of the 3 activities comprised in the package we would spend doing individually. Sam said he would need to check with his responsible. He came back to use saying that what we were not able to reschedule the package to another day, that leaving would mean we forfeit our massages and buffet. If we left, all he could compensate us for was with a 2 for 1 voucher that meant an entrance to the wellness amenities for 2 persons at 51 euro valid from Monday to Thursday.
Sam tried to empathize with us, saying such a thing has happened to him too. Yet he felt it reasonable that all he and the resort could do about the already sour situation was offer us a voucher…
With not much of an option, we decided to salvage what was left of the evening and went ahead. For that we take full responsibility, we should have just left.
I had dinner while my partner, Willem was getting his massage. I picked my spot, left to check out the buffet and came back with a slice of cake and scoop of ice cream on my table. Elated I sat down thinking it was for me, that Sam recalled we mentioned it was an evening to celebrate my birthday and organised it as an apology for the little that could be done with our request. Embarrassingly I was very much mistaken, it was taken away by the waiter, whom I thanked, and given to someone else. Luckily, I hadn’t taken a bite of it. When I was having my massage, Willem had his dinner. Woefully, he was asked if he came alone and Willem’s conversation about the situation with the staff of the restaurant encouraged him to seek out the responsible.
I looked for Willem when my massage was done, by then he was already waiting a good 15mins to speak to a manager. Since the superior for the evening on the amenities floor was unavailable, we were told there was another at the front desk with whom we could speak to if we were set on leaving. We were. We got changed and approached the check out desk where Brandt was awaiting us. When asked if we could speak to the manager, he assured us he was. Again, we repeated the sequence of events. We for a second felt comforted, because he said he will be taking note of our experience to pass it along. To our dismay it was because he too had no authority to make a decision on behalf of Waer Waters to absolve our displeasure. He said we would hear back from him soon.
In the car, 20mins later, Willem receives a call from Brandt. He tells us that we have the option to keep the voucher we were given or be refunded 10 euro per person. He said we would get back to them via phone, on what he decides, till date we haven’t. But neither is there a phone number available...
Read moreIf you're looking for a day spa, this place is great. However, as a 4-star hotel it leaves a fair bit to be desired.
There is no parking reserved for hotel guests, which means you have to be lucky to get one that isn't taken by the horses of day visitors. That's minor though compared to the check-in experience, which is more reminiscent of a municipal pool reception than that of a 4-star hotel where you're paying some €350 per night.
There's no separate reception for the hotel, so you have to go through turnstiles (hello, municipal pool) then queue with the day guests only to be greeted by one of a selection of stressy and unhelpful receptionist who aren't that interested in customer service. Ours made us feel rather unwelcome, starting with the fact that he clearly didn't like that we had booked via booking.com, and as a result "couldn't find our reservation" despite not actually having looked. Without asking he grabbed my wife's phone and started searching her emails for a booking number, before sighing and asking a colleague for help. Said colleague typed the first three letters of my wife's surname into their system and found us within about fine seconds. Who would have thought that might be an option!
Once checked in we were given a pile of towels and bathrobes to carry ourselves to the room. Fair enough they hand them to day guests, but why on Earth couldn't they just be placed in our room? Having just arrived, our hands were somewhat full.
The tapas restaurant is expensive given the lacking quality. If I'm paying €16 for a plate of nachos, I would prefer them not to be covered in highly processed artificial "cheese" sauce. I wouldn't be happy with that at a cinema or lower end camping restaurant, but in a facility that emphasizes luxury it's truly baffling. Barely edible.
The only other vegetarian option, called something like "oh my veggies", has a little sign saying it contains fish. It's unclear what said fish is in -the olives?- but thankfully the staff could be called away from their heated discussion to ask them what the fish element was. The first gentlemen said he didn't know and left it at that, the second said she would find out then promptly disappeared never to be seen again. On the bright side, my interrupting their discussion led one of them to realise he had another customer's drink in his hand, and that half of the tables were empty of people but full of plates that needed clearing.
On the subject of staff, as much of a nuisance as our arrival was to the receptionist, so too were we made to feel unwelcome in the undressed area. Looking around upon arrival we entered a hallway that said "event sauna", where a man in a poncho and irritated disposition told us we had to be undressed (we were) and that we weren't welcome anyway (unclear why).
Overall, the concept is great, facilities are nice, but service and and non-core offering like food is...
Read moreDISCRIMINATION ON BASIS OF HEALTH CONDITION. After the funeral of my spouse I'd realised that I absolutely must take a little breath between tons of work that I have to do. Upon advice of a friend, I decided to give this spa a try, drove 1 hour from Brussels (and 1 hour back) just to be kicked out for my health condition. Seeing on their website that swim shorts are not allowed, I have taken the tightest swim trunks I have with me that look almost exactly the same they sell there. Except for that they are not 100% tight on my legs, as I have a deep vein thrombosis and I just physically cannot wear something that is squeezing my legs. Having explained all that, got kicked out anyway. After having had a meal there first of course, because they needed to get some money from me first, of course. Only when coming down and after having had an explanation of the nice things I can do (some meditation, salt scrub, etc.), I JUST IN THE END received a reproach that "hm, actually, you have to buy different swim trunks from us". Just as soon as I put my feet in the swimming pool. Or go to the naked area, which is completely against what I was ready for. It was cold outside on top of it, and the naked area is also outside. Btw, also fell outside because of the wet floor and no sign that you have to be cautious because it's wet. I am pretty sure I will draw attention of my lawyer to this situation, once I at least settle a little bit after the funeral of my spouse. And yes, from the bottom of my heart I wish that once someone won't let those people have a tiniest breath from a nightmare like this. Just because someone won't like the swim trunks they'd have to wear for their medical condition. No words, just pure shock. Forgot to mention - no, you are not allowed to have your phone with you either, even though you have just had a funeral and you have someone alone at home. And no, you cannot step out with your drink outside in the smoking area of the restaurant, I suppose because of the fact that people are not prepared for that they can easily fall on the wet floor. So, yes, glass would not help in this case. P.S. Yes, the manager (the one that was on duty, I suppose) stated that they want everyone to wear very tight swimwear "because they are afraid of sweat coming out of it in the sauna". No matter how bewildering this "explanation" was, I suggested I don't go to saunas at all, if that's what they wish. The answer was "we cannot be watching for you all the time if you go to saunas or not". A true "touch" of North Korea all in all Following their answer: I DID wear slippers all the time and I fell anyway. As for the rest I have nothing else to say - I tell them about their discrimination, they tell me about their "Scandinavian experience"....
