Kasteelhof t'Hooge is a nice family run hotel close to Ypres and actually in the middle of what was a WW1 battlefield. The original house was rebuilt in the 1920s. There is a big amusement park behind it but it wasn't an issue. I can see it being noisier in the summer months with the windows open but no issue in October. The rooms and hotel are a little quirky but everything is very clean, the beds are comfortable and there is good water pressure in the shower. It takes a minute to find what is the little bar/restaurant within the hotel as it's not really marked but I was also jet lagged. There is an annex building that is new, which looks like a doctor's office but I would still recommend staying in the main building if you like historic and charming. There is a nice patio and walk around what was the battlefield but it was too rainy and cold to enjoy. The food in the restaurant/bar was good and they had a nice selection of wine, beer, etc. Breakfast was included and was very good - everything was fresh and not much processed breads, etc. If you are interested in WWI, this is a good spot to feel in the middle of history. Loved the comfy down comforter and slept very well. It's not a Marriott or other chain so if you like those, this probably won't appeal but I was very pleased with my stay. Would...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I stayed here a few years back for a long weekend in Ypres. The hotel is in a lovely quiet area, be it off a main road, and is very easy to access the town (by car). The hotel itself is full of history and the rooms are clean and big. The front garden and surrounding area is full of history. Museum next door and Commonwealth War Graves across the road. It’s around a 45 minute drive from Bruges and Ghent which are both amazing places to visit and local museums and memorials are all within a 20 minute drive. The hotel can book you a taxi with a local and friendly company and it’s not extortionate. We visited again with my parents and just had to book Kasteelhof because we loved it so much. The man in reception even remembered us from the last time we visited 😌 planning on returning as soon as we can. Food and drink is top notch (not cheap but worth the money) and the staff are lovely. Can’t go wrong.
The only downside I can think of is that if you don’t drive or don’t have access to a car you would have to rely on public transport/taxis to get about as it’s out of the way to walk anywhere other than the museum and war...
Read moreLovely building in a nice quiet area and the grounds were quite interesting being scattered with WW1 articles. We stayed in the new part of the hotel but it would of been nice to stay in the older building. We stayed for two nights and we ate there the first night and the food was fine (steak) for around 22 Euro and drinks were not too expensive. Perfect spot to stay if planning to visit the WW1 cemetery's and Ypres a 5 minute drive away. Hooge crater cemetery and museum a few minutes walk away from the hotel and Tyne Cott cemetery about 15 minutes drive away. The new part of the hotel has a good wi-fi signal (free) and considering the main road is not far away you had no noise having good double glazed windows. The only down side is no coffee machine or ironing board in the room but a very good walk in shower but no bath. The room was spotless and I couldn't fault the bed a good nights sleep and you can get BBC 1 and 2 on the TV. I would of given it 5* rather than 4* but the lack of a coffee machine in the room spoils it somewhat. Bottles of water by the way we're 6 Euro which to be honest I felt...
