Our group of 6 stayed in 3A and 3E and were really pleased with the property. The front desk (Jessica & Susanna) were incredibly helpful and made our check-in & check out very easy. They arranged our flights from Belize City to San Pedro, taxi from San Pedro airport to the condo, grocery delivery, private cook (Marfa) and 6-person golf cart rental.
The condos are beautifully decorated, spacious and very clean. The kitchen is well appointed with plenty of pots, pans, and utensils to get you cooking.
We loved watching the sunrise and sipping cocktails from our huge balcony. The palapa at the end of the dock was our favorite spot to lay out, relax and find privacy away from the busier beach and pools. Also the best location to watch the sunsets! As with most Caribbean places in December, the sand fleas and mosquitoes are fierce around dusk, so definitely bring the bug spray!
The property is 3.5 miles South of downtown San Pedro, about a 10-15 minute golf cart ride. While we enjoyed Marfa’s cooking the first couple days, we decided to venture out on our own because there were so many delicious restaurants nearby that we wanted to experience. We really loved El Fogon and Hidden Treasure. Robin’s Kitchen was closed when we stopped by, but she graciously gave us a sample of the chicken and it was incredible. We would definitely go back for that. Lone Star Grill was very close to the condo and was pretty good. Black Orchid is also very close, but we did not get to try it.
We dove with Ecologic Divers during our stay and highly recommend them if you’re looking for a smaller shop that offers private charters. We had 5 divers and they charged $500/day for a two-tank dive. They were awesome and spoiled us rotten, setting up all our gear each day and even putting on and removing our fins on each dive. :) We saw lots of nurse & reef sharks, spotted eagle rays, beautiful coral canyons and lots of other marine life.
One of the highlights of our trip was making the hour golf cart ride to the Secret Beach. Definitely a tourist ”trap,” but so much fun and totally worth it. Our waiter Emilio set lounge chairs up for us on the covered dock, brought us ceviche, pirate punch and beers as we floated in the sparkling aqua blue water. It was the absolute perfect way to spend our last day on the island!
Our group unanimously agreed this was our best trip yet. We hope to come back to San Pedro and would definitely consider staying at Hol Chan Reef...
Read moreThere are both positives and negatives to this resort. Starting with the positives, the views are absolutely stunning, and the suites themselves are quite nice. Unfortunately, there were far more negatives than positives during our stay.
We traveled as a large family, including couples, seniors, and kids, and rented two different suites. Since we had two families in each suite, we requested two keys, which the resort could not provide. This became a major issue because the deadbolt on one of the doors (3B) could only be opened with a key, both inside and outside. We didn’t realize this until one person left and locked the door behind them. We ended up locked inside, and when we called the concierge for help, no one showed up with a key to let us out. We had to wait hours until our family member returned to unlock the door.
To make matters worse, the elevator broke during our stay, and my elderly father got stuck on it!!! He had to jump 6 feet out of the elevator when someone finally found him. He could have been seriously hurt, and there was no apology or follow-up from the resort!! To add to the frustration, my elderly mother, who has a disability, had to walk up three flights of stairs for a day and a half until the elevator was repaired.
The concierge also caused some significant problems. Although she organized several things for us (golf carts, restaurant reservations, and a private chef) I would strongly advise anyone staying here to avoid blindly following her recommendations. The restaurants she suggested served overpriced, terrible food. The golf carts we rented had multiple issues, including broken lights, which made driving in the dark dangerous. The resort is far from town, so those lights were needed. The biggest problem is that when I raised these concerns with the concierge, she was dismissive. She even went as far as questioning me, about why we "locked the deadbolt on the door," when I brought up getting locked in. I told her this is a fire hazard, and she shouldn't be questioning me on why I choose to lock a door. Imagine if there was an emergency and we are locked into a room 3 stories up with no way out! Unbelievable.
In the end, the beautiful views just weren’t enough to make up for the many issues we faced. If you decide to stay here, I highly recommend doing your own research and booking your own restaurants, golf carts, and activities. Also make sure that your room can be exited in case of...
