Moments after arriving at this hostel I decided to cancel the reservation. I had seen a much nicer place in a more central area with a pool and a garden and great reviews, for the same price. ||||I told the hostess and apologized profusely, making up a fib about the internet being slow, so as not to offend her with the real reasons why I was leaving their establishment: it is aesthetically bland and depressing, the bed sagged terribly, and the hostel is poorly located. The internet actually was pretty slow as well. She told me she would call to “the muchacho,” which I left her to do as I went to gather my things. ||||As I was removing the last of my belongings from the room, someone strolled in, without addressing me or even acknowledging my presence, and proceeded to investigate the bathroom, and then began literally SNIFFING around the room to see if I had soiled it somehow! I ignored this and walked out, down the hall to the backyard, where I had parked my motorcycle. ||||The muchacho, whom I now surmise him to be, followed me, insisting that having entered the room, I was no longer allowed to leave without paying some surcharge. This was untrue as I had made the reservation on Booking and still had time to cancel through the app. Also, I had only been there fifteen minutes. I told him sorry, I needed better internet to work and that I’d found another place. Here’s where he threatened to call the tourism police. That was ludicrous, so I encouraged him to go ahead. ||||He followed me outside and while I strapped down the last of my belongings to my bike, he continued insisting that I had owed them money. I told him I had cancelled my reservation with Booking.com and that it was a done deal, and I was sorry but I had to go. I prepared to exit the lot, turning my heavy bike around with all the gear loaded on it, and looked up to see him barring the gate!||||At this point, I stopped reasoning with him. I pushed my bike up to the exit, and began removing the various latches and bars he had put in place. Suddenly, as I was opening the main deadbolt, he reached out and slammed it shut. “We’re not in your country. You have to respect me,” he said.||||“I respect you, but I’m going. You can’t lock me in here,” I told him. He replied that the police were on their way and there would be big problems if I left now—not that he was giving me an option. ||||Eventually, the hostess from before came on the scene (I presume her to be his mother) and he sort of calmed down, and walked away from the gate long enough for me to unlatch and open it, and remove my||bike. I considered waiting around for the police to show up, but I didn’t feel that I had done anything wrong or illegal and didn’t care to deal with a potentially drawn-out situation conducted in a language that I don’t speak fluently. ||||I went back to the other, much nicer hotel across the river, surrounded by restaurants, cafes, shops and little parks. I’m glad Hostal Butch Cassidy didn’t get a dime of my money. I did somewhat enjoy my Wild West experience, though some people might not get such a kick out of it. Best bet is to just stay...
