During our honeymoon we ended our journey at this wonderful place. We were there for five nights. Before we got there we were scared that after a trip of more than three weeks, being in the same place for that long would get boring. Boy were we wrong!
The lodge has great characteristics and a really good atmosphere thanks to the staff and management. The food is also a delight, and very diverse. Our retreat was a beautiful house like structure which was built in such a way that it keeps most of the warmth out. That said, we never felt the need for airconditioning.
Twice a day there was a possibility for a game drive or a boat safari depending on the planning. The reserve is about 15 minutes away from the camp, but it was not uncommon that the game drive was already in progress whilst driving on the tar roads. There is plenty of wild life, like hyena's, wardhogs, buffalo's and more roaming just next to the roads, which makes the trip to the reserve worth your while. The reserver itself is full of wild life. There we have seen many lions, a leopard, crocodiles, monitor lizards, waterbucks, and more. There are also many bird species that will catch your eye during the rides, especially the fish eagle. The boat safari is also worth your while. The elephants and hippo's really enjoy the big Chobe river and it is not a rare sight to see the elephants playing in the water. Even in the camp itself you have a chance to spot some cool friendly animals like the mongoose or the bushbuck. In rare occasions you might even be able to experience the hippo from just outside your retreat!
It is also possible to book a day trip to the Victoria Falls from Bakwena. You will be picked up at the lodge and dropped off at the Victoria Falls. Crossing the border is something special, but other than that it was definitely worth the trip. What an amazing view (in April at least). We also went out for lunch and had a small stop at the market where we could buy some souvenirs. Pro tip: Work on your bargaining skills before going there.
During our stay there were a few moments where I did not feel well. The staff and especially the management were always there to ensure that I was okay. It made me feel very welcome. In general the management takes your well being and a pleasant stay very serious. A big thank you to David and Candy and the staff for making our stay an unforgettable experience and I do hope that we can come...
Read moreWe had a lovely stay at Chobe Bakwena Lodge. |Rooms were excellent- we had a tree top room which had wonderful decor, a huge bathroom including outdoor shower and it never ran out of hot water. Super comfortable bed and was quite at night. They also did our washing (5 pieces a day) which was super helpful as we had been travelling for over a week.|We stayed 3 nights and did 1 afternoon safari (1 was enough as you don't see many animals in Chobe at this time of the day), 2 morning safari's (both where excellent including see the big 4 and so much more) an afternoon sunset cruise and instead of doing another safari on our last afternoon we choose to do the cruise to the 4 corners on the river which was excellent- it was only the 2 of us and driver waited till sunset to turn around to come back.|Our guide Max on the safari's & river cruise was excellent- he engaged our group and was wonderful at getting the right spot to take pics.|The reason I didn't give this lodge 5 stars is:|- The food. They offer a continental breakfast at 5:30am, a piece of cake on safari and then brunch isn't until 11:30am. We found ourselves extremely hungry by 10:30am. Also the quality of food was average. Our main meal each night was lovely but the rest was just average.|- The lodge is 20 minutes from the park/water and you travel in an open air vehicle. The 20 minutes back to the lodge each time was VERY uncomfortable. If you are staying make sure you take a face mask or something to cover yourself- it really is horrible.|- The amount of people you go on safari with is dependant on how many people arrive on the same day. There was a total of 6 people which was just enough in the safari cars. One night we had an extra 2 people in the car which was 8 and it was SO comfortable to travel the 20 minutes to/from the water- I couldn't imagine doing a 3-4 hour safari with this many people. Apparently there was an option to pay for private safari's but this wasn't offered to us, even though we booked direct with the lodge.||Overall we enjoyed our time at Bakwena with the highlight being the staff- they all went above and beyond to do everything they could for us and for that we...
Read moreDon't even hesitate. Go for it when you are in Kasane! We loved our stay in Chobe Bakwena lodge. Everything was perfect. The service is great, the staff is super friendly and very nice. As it was our honeymoon, they were setting a very special table for us in a different area every night. They were always asking us what we would like to drink, eat, ... The food is incredible. The chef was surprising us every day even more with amazing taste for each meal. The room is very beautiful, facing the river with a private terrace to enjoy the view with intimacy, with an indoor and outdoor shower. We were lucky enough to be upgraded and have a bigger room than expected. The lodge has a very nice dining / drinking area which is open and facing the river. The swimming pool area is very beautiful as well. The whole lodge is decorated with a nice taste. The lodge is built in the nature which we loved and allowed us to see many animals. The guide was great and had a lot of knowledge on the animals. We never saw so many elephants. We also saw many lions (including cubs), giraffes, ... Every meal, drinks, coffee time in the park was very special. You can do 4*4 safaris or boat safaris and both are very pleasant. Thanks to covid we were alone in the lodge so we had a very special time. PCR and transfers before going to Zimbabwe was managed very well by the staff and we felt comfortable all the way and not...
