So you want to visit Lençóis Maranhenses but speak no Portuguese and are on a relative budget? This is surprisingly easier said than done. Here is your guide to doing Lençóis Maranhenses from an ignorant Australian.
Contact Marilene at Pousada Paraíso dos Lençóis via their facebook page. The contact can be a bit scattered and you will generally rely on google translate to go back and forth. She also speaks fluent French if that is better for you. You will need to spend at least a couple of nights here in order to enjoy a couple of tours to the park (including the sunset tour which is incredible). Marilene will book you a spot on the bus from Sao Luis to her Pousada. This is not a very pleasant bus trip and is more like an overly crowded minivan but is the only public transport available. A taxi is a better option if you have a bit more funds and after catching the bus on the way there, I took a cab with my 2 travel buddies on the way back. We originally considered a day trip from Sao Luis but couldn't actually find many places willing to do it and the ones that were had quite steep pricing. In retrospect, this would also be an incredibly unpleasant day of travelling for what really demands more than a day.
Pick and book your tours as you arrive. Try and have a vague idea of what type of thing you want to do but even if you don't, Marilene will still hook you up. Pricing for the tours is reasonable and standard (about 75 reals for the half day tours. Regardless of whether this place is what you choose or not, all tours and agencies will offer an English guide at an added cost (often significant because these guides are freelance so it is like a private tour). This is not worth your money as there is very little you need to communicate that you can't just do with gestures. The views and landscape in the park speak their own language.
Pousada Paraíso dos Lençóis is definitely the place to stay. Rooms are clean, air conditioned and reasonably priced. The staff are SUPER helpful and the place feels very comfortable. It is basic accommodation done well and exceeded my...

Read moreMy family stayed here feb 11 to 13 2025. The owner is a very warm and hospitable lady who helped with our transport from Sao Luis and our Lencois tours, despite our late arrival at the hotel. The room is clean and spacious, and the beds are comfortable with clean linens and towels. Location is great as restaurants and shops are within 10 minutes by foot from the hotel. We had the added benefit of the hotel helping connect us with a transfer from Sao Luis airport. Breakfast was super- fresh fruits, cold meats, local fruit juice & cakes. Personally I loved the tapioca with coconut. We were very lucky that the owner’s son and family was visiting during our stay and he gave us personalized recommendations. Would highly recommend the Pousada & would stay here again on...
