Pousada Estação do Trem -Centro histórico da Cidade. — Hotel in Região Geográfica Imediata de São João del Rei

The pousada is by the train station but a good 20min walk from the main bus station, though you can take a 5min local bus for R$2 single. ||||The rooms are fairly small, run down and strangely decorated with weived ceiling panels and with windows opening into the room providing a view of the wall of the adjacent building with each with it's own train themed painting.||||The toilet/Shower was incredibly tiny and we are not fat people.||||The friendly staff were eager to help (apart from the breakfast lady who was not happy when I told her the cheese and ham needed replenishing). Breakfast is adequate (not abundant) as described in lonely planets 2008. Only good value if you can haggle down the price as we did over the phone with the help of a portugese speaker.||||Would recommend if you have an early bus to catch out of town. ALL buses outside the train station towards the Rodavaria will stop outside the Rodavaria. very convenient with backpacks.||||The town has some nice churches, especially at night. But it is not easy to find good places to eat. Several of those in lonely planets had shut, but we found a small newly opened Italian ('Delivery Galdino' Located on the the left just as you turn off Av Eduardo Magalhaes on Rue Aureliano Mourao) full of local people where we enjoyed an excellent meal. The chef speaks good Engish and was very friendly. ||||Further along at the junction of Av Tiradentes, are 2 restaurant bars which became very crowded from 2030h.||||The square in front of Igreja de Sao Francisco de Assis has some drinking holes and eateries.||Av Tiradentes after 2100h was full of young people enjoying a Sat night out. Girls smartly dressed; boys not so. ||||A great treat at the weekends is Smoking Mary an old steam train which runs between Sao Joao del Rei and the very pretty old gold mining town of Tiradentes. We took the bus to Tiradentes at $ 2:80 for half an hour ride from the rodavaria. Saw two pretty squares and two churches (the magnificant Matriz De Santo Antonio & Igreja Ns Rosario Dos Pretos which was built in the nights by slaves for the slaves), but did not take the horse drawn carriage as the streets are cobbled and bumpy. The horses were badly kept and smelt bad.||||Plenty of time to wander the shops with good textiles and a glass of beer before catching the 5pm train back to SSdR. $25 for single ticket- half price for over 60s. (CASH only) About 40mins.||||The scenery along the train journey is not as pretty as that between Mariana and Ouro Preto for the same price. The guide book recommends sitting on right coming back...

Café da manhã me decepcionou muito. Só tinha pão, dois bolos e rosquinhas diversas que pareciam de supermercado.|De frios só queijo branco e presunto. Senti falta de mussarela, acho que precisava ter a opção. E mesmo assim, quando cheguei apenas 1h após o início, já tinham acabado. |Peguei o pão, um bolo e fui sentar, pois imaginei que em breve iriam repor. Não aconteceu e meu marido questionou a funcionária, que com a maior antipatia, respondeu: vai repor.|Fiquei estarrecida com a falta de educação e simpatia de todas as funcionárias da cozinha que cruzei. Presenciei uma idosa questionar se haviam ovos e, novamente, a funcionária pareceu incomodada e disse: vou ver|Esperei a reposição do iogurte, que também não aconteceu. Meu marido questionou outra funcionária e ela nem ao menos respondeu ao seu bom dia. Disse que iria repor e saiu andando do jeito que já estava. |Um café da manhã absurdamente simples e que se acabar, você escolhe entre ficar sem comer ou ser tratado com antipatia, chegando a ficar em dúvida se está errado perguntar. Fiquei muito muito incomodada com esse tratamento, não via a hora de comer e subir. Você fica com pressa de sair do ambiente tamanho o semblante de incômodo das funcionárias.|A acústica da pousada também deixa a desejar. Entendo que faz parte da estrutura, mas é desagradável. No primeiro dia até relevei, apesar de ouvir a conversa e o ronco dos hóspedes ao redor. Mas no segundo, uma família fez check in à 1h da manhã, resultando em acordar no susto e demorar uns 20 ou 30 minutos pra ter silêncio de novo. Acredito que o funcionário que os recebeu poderia tê-los orientado sobre o volume da conversa, mas não aconteceu. Ficaram fazendo perguntas sobre pontos turísticos, brincaram, riram, por minutos e parecia que estava dentro do meu quarto. Despertei totalmente e voltei a dormir mais de uma hora depois.|O quarto é grande e espaçoso, mas o colchão está cansado. Ele afunda onde vc fica por mais tempo, durante a noite eu ficava revezando entre a ponta e o meio, pra igualar. Depois que você pega no sono pesado, ok, mas até pegar, vai sofrer.|Também não gostei de ser obrigado a deixar a chave do quarto na recepção quando saímos para passear. Devem ter seus motivos pra isso, mas na minha opinião isso tira toda privacidade e segurança dos hóspedes, que deixam seus itens pessoais no quarto. Não tive nenhum problema com relação a isso, mas achei desconfortável e nenhuma pousada que já fiquei era assim. |Resumindo, a localização é excelente, mas eu não ficaria novamente. Prefiro andar mais, pegar o carro para os passeios, mas dormir bem, ter um café da manhã que te lembre que está em Minas Gerais e, principalmente, funcionárias educadas, no mínimo. A beautiful place to spend a few nights. Old fashioned with modern touches. Antique furniture. Gorgeous foot wide hardwood planks on the floors. Woven bamboo mats on the ceilings. Freshly varnished wooden shutters with interesting strret scenes painted on the walls outside the windows. Nice staff, as English is spoken. Cafe de manha is taken in the grotto-like basement restaurant. Paying cash up front gets a small discount. If you are in Sao Joao to ride the Maria Fumaca to Tiradentes, you can't get any closer to the railway station than this pousada. It is also close to the center of this rather interesting city. A quiet place unless there is a late night wedding...
