We were visited the Horseshoe Campground July 9 – 12th, 2024 in a 30-foot motor home with our five grandchildren, aged 5 – 10. We chose this campground because it is directly across the road to the horseshoe canyon, and we planned to do several hikes. There was a heat wave when we while we were there so this limited our activities as temperatures soured to 35 C at the top of the canyon and hotter down below. The campground was clean, and the hookups were fine. The sites were a little narrow, and there was no shade on our site. The entire campground had little shade, but if you know Drumheller, you know it is barren. The tent sites had wooden shelters, which would have been a life saver during the heat wave. We were assigned a site backing on to the playground which was smart because the kids were there every chance they could. The play structure had the basic swings, slide and climbing things that was in good condition. The kids had water gun fights, and no one complained about the noise. There was also mini golf for $3.50 each so we went twice, and the kids loved it. The campground had a little store, an ice cream shop and a beer tent with local beers. The workers were friendly but not intrusive. The washrooms were clean, but the showers were out of order which didn’t impact us. The best part was that the canyon was so close. We went hiking twice, and it was astounding. It is huge and just awe inspiring. It really makes you understand your place as just a speck in the history. They have built stairs with railings down to the canyon floor which helps. The kids loved it, but we could not take more than a couple of hours as the heat was too much. Overall it was a five star for us, but the lack of showers would be a problem for campers who don’t have a shower in their RV.

Aug 5th 2022 I arrived at the campground and was welcomed amazingly. My family planned this trip with much excitement as we were able to get the perfect spot right by the playground for my 5yr old daughter. After backing into our designated site I sent my daughter to play at the playground so I could set up the BBQ to make lunch. At this time the grounds keeper was mowing the lawn and approach my site and started doing laps around my RV and behind. My daughter who was playing 40ft away became agitated as it was loud and he was mowing between the RV and playground. should stood behind a small tree as I motioned her to stay until he finished. she began to pick up twigs from the ground and broke a small twig off the tree. This is the moment the grounds keeper drove at my daughter screaming viciously swearing and waving his arms at her. I hollered "that's enough", quickly grabbed my daughter and put her in the RV to calm her down. The groundskeeper at this point drove the lawnmower right up to my open door and started screaming at her and me. I chased him away as he was terrifying my daughter and obviously deranged. I was refunded my money and left this campground. This is not a properly ran or safe campground, I will continue to share my experience with all to ensure no others will be subjected to this pathetic attempt to be considered a family friendly campground. I have included photos of the reason of the vicious assault on a 5yr old girl.

First, you need to note, this is not "an in the bush" campground that a northern Albertan is accustomed to. This was our cheaper alternative to a hotel while we toured the area with our kids. It is close quarters, however, it is VERY clean, running water, toilets, showers ($1/4min), electricity and sewage hookups, picnic tables and firepits (bring your own grill). The wood is not cheap. It was $16 for our first bag and then $11 for our second. I dont know why there was a price change or if the second man gave us a deal. It wasn't a large amount. Everything is in wonderful condition. The staff/owners are family and so kind and pleasant and helpful. The trees planted are still young and do not provide tons of shade, but they will grow. There are grassy spots by each lot for your tent. We chose to tent in the power area because I need a cpap to sleep. It was a wonderful plus to have grass to sleep on and not gravel. The playground is for younger children. Ours were 10, and it was a bit too small for them. But we made up anytime we spent there playing games and running in the open spaces. The mini golf is not fancy but fun and pretty inexpensive at $3.50/person. Not to forget, it is directly across from Horseshoe Canyon. You literally walk across the highway and can hike the canyon! For someone looking for a hotel alternative and has a tent or trailer (or wants to try their adorable little cabins), this place was perfect. I definitely recommend.
