This place was definitely a cool spot, lots of interesting art and little buildings. My partner and I stayed her for 3 nights in April - I don't know if it's because the hostel wasn't yet prepared for visitors - as it seemed like nothing had been done there since last summer - but there was absolutely nothing there for visitors. By that I mean it is the first hostel I have ever stayed at that didn't have coffee or tea, cream or sugar for guests, not even a coffee maker. The first hostel I've ever stayed at that didn't offer even a simple complimentary breakfast like toast or oatmeal - there is nothing for guests. There is a bistro attached to the hostel and unless you brought your own food then you are basically forced to get coffee and breakfast there which is expensive but the whole island is expensive which is expected especially these days. Anyways, other than having the entire place to ourselves due to it being early in the tourist season, I would not recommend. It is also the most expensive hostel I've ever stayed at with nothing included, even AirBnBs offer more than this place. Our bed was also broken and we proped it up with hardcover books..... there is also no one around to talk to about anything you may have questions or concerns about - no hostel staff.
All in all, this is a old, quirky guesthouse....
Read moreAs others have mentioned this is an older rustic building and it was just what I was looking for. I stayed here last week while attending the Denman Island Writers Fest which was a fantastic experience and it was a wonderfully homey spot to return to each night and the next morning to wake up to the freshly brewed coffee in the great café on site. The breakfasts and the homemade blueberry pie which I had for lunch were exceptional. This place is the most convenient on the island if you do not have a car - which I do not. Just a short walk from the ferry and then a few minutes to the fest. Donna was incredibly kind and friendly as was everyone I came in contact with who were either working or staying at the Guesthouse. It was very quiet and peaceful despite being fully booked = and to quote Charles Demers one of the writers speaking at the fest 'the roosters that wake you in the morning on Denman sound just like they do in the cartoons'. ( If you don't want to be woken by the rooster you can just close the window: but for me - coming from downtown Vancouver with crows waking me up - this was a...
Read moreI've been to many hostels but this really takes the cake. ||||If you're looking for a true experience of Denman (an amazing island with an amazing, generous community), look no further. Spend some time hanging out by the cafe or the surrounding garden. Interesting people of all sorts pass by this hostel and the cafe almost everyday. Get to know the community and engage in all sorts of activities. Help out. Or if you want to be alone this is a great place for solitude too. The porch is lovely, great for writing. Or get a solo room. Or just stay in your dorm. This is not a party hostel but a hostel for real travelers. The owners Donna and Sheldon are helpful and friendly, and you can get a glimpse of how a small business is run with passion and hard work.||||The hostel itself is charming and creaky, and quite comfortable. It's no five-star hotel, but no real travelers seek luxury. It can get quite cold at night but that's part of the fun. ||||Great food at the cafe. ||||I stayed here for almost two months and will likely...
