The Aauuknuk Lodge is on an island in Ahousat territory, about a 30 minute boat ride from Tofino. The least expensive way to get there is from the Tofino where you can take a water taxi. Call the lodge to check taxi times. The lodge is just outside the Ahousat community and it is actually a big long trailer that used to be used by loggers when they were working on the island. It has a big kitchen/diner, a nice retrofitted lounge with satellite tv, common bathrooms with showers, and small rooms with comfortable beds. The location and the lodge are not charming but they are very clean and affordable, and the folks who run Auuknuk are lovely. It is really a place to stay if you do not want to camp on the beaches along the Wild Side trail, and if you are interested in meeting folks from the Ahousat community. You can arrange to have breakfast and lunch cooked for you at the lodge which means diner style food, or you can bring your own groceries. There is a guest fridge. Internet is free. You can also arrange to be taken by boat to the end of the Wild Side trail and walk back, if the full 22 km walk is too much for you. Be aware that the trail has minimal amounts of board walk so it is more challenging than the rainforest trails you might be used to in Tofino, but it is absolutely doable except for people with mobility issues. It can also get muddy. Aauuknuk is also a good place to arrange for an Indigenous tour guide with a boat to take you to the hotsprings. We paid $90 each for a day long visit at the hot springs, which is less than what you would pay from Tofino and we did not have to hang around with a tour group and stick to...
Read moreThis lodge is different. It is located on Flores Island near the Ahousaht village and at the start of the Wildside Trail. If you aren't hiking the trail there is probably no reason for you to visit. If you are hiking the trail this lodge is your only place to stay if you aren't camping. For that purpose it is fine, just don't expect much beyond the basics. The rooms are just big enough for a double bed, a chair, and a very small table (no closet or second chair). There are mens and women's bathrooms and showers down the hall. The lodge has a modest size common room and some picnic tables on the porch. WiFi is provided. Meals can be arranged in advance (for extra, of course) and we found them good, basic food that will keep you going on the trail. ||This shouldn't be read as a negative review. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They picked us up at the dock (we came in by boat from Tofino) and cheerfully met our requests. I'm giving this three stars because it is such basic accommodation, but compared with camping on the beach we were in luxury. As I said at the beginning, if you're here for hiking this is the (only)...
Read moreAbsolutely amazing place to stay. You have to take a boat from Tofino from the 1st St Dock for $20 one way. The accommodations were basic, but comfortable and clean. Most rooms have only one double bed, but my mom and I lucked out with a room with two double beds. ||The beach is a close walk, about 3 minutes. The beaches on Flores Island are much calmer (and more desolate) than Tofino.||Staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. Also provided a lot of insight and knowledge regarding the trail (Wild Side Trail) and its history.||My mom and I stayed there for two nights, a night on either side of camping on the trail. ||Staff cooked (really good) meals upon request ($15 lunch and $20 dinner), there is also a restaurant on the island that delivers.||||Highly recommend for anyone thinking of staying around Tofino even if you aren't doing the hike. Very reasonably priced, significantly cheaper than staying in Tofino even with the...
