My husband's mom gave her boys her timeshare. It was our 5th anniversary 8/4/17 so in January of this year, we made plans as to where we would stay. We never took a honeymoon so we thought the 5th year would be perfect! We chose this hotel in the Cayman Islands through the timeshare. It was SO DISAPPOINTING!!! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER , and did I mention NEVER?! Book this hotel through a timeshare! They make you PAY for it... Literally! The hotel is 45 minutes away from the GMC airport. Leon (so awesome!) will pick you up but since its such a far ride, he charges $50 for two people for transportation from that airport. When we checked in, we were informed that there was a fee for EVERYTHING! There was no free WiFi and you even paid for ELECTRICITY! WiFi was $7.99 A DAY for basic for one device, high speed was $21.99 A DAY for ONE device, and $18.99 A DAY for up to 5 devices. It was two of us so you do the math for 7 days! It was also a $10 a day government fee as well as them holding $500 on our card. Check-in was at 4 p.m. so we had to sit around for 3hrs but in the meantime, the girl at the front desk gave us two free coupons for rum punch at the sports bar Ivan's. They add a 15% gratuity to all bills. The beach was not enjoyable. It was debri all over it! After eating, we waited some more until I told my husband to ask if our room was ready. She finally gave us keys at 3 p.m. The next morning when the housekeeper came (she was awesome too!), she informed us when I asked for new towels that they only give out new towels every THREE days and if you want some before then it would be a $10 charge. We met with our "concierge" Wallace and asked him why did we have to pay for everything and he proceeds to go into a whole spill about how the Cayman Islands is the most expensive island in the world and how there is no crime and they don't own guns and blah blah blah! First off, my husband and I are professionals and make good money but in all logic, who pays for ELECTRICITY and WIFI on vacation?! Even the CHEAPEST hotels offer it as free amenities! Then, we wanted to swim with the dolphins and found out that all the fun stuff to do was way on the other side side of the island. A hour away! Wallace seemed "surprised" when we told him we didn't have a car. I'm sorry but I'm not used to renting a car on vacation. Wallace couldn't even get us discounted tickets on anything and told us he could give us a free Wifi ticket if we came to a presentation. We went grocery shopping but were so worried about cooking and using electricity that we didn't want to cook and it was at that point, we found another hotel! We checked in August 6th and checked out August 8th. The front desk girls have WAY TOO MUCH ATTITUDE for my liking! We came to Sunshine Suites (we had to pay Leon $70 for the hour ride) where their neighboring sister, The Westin, allows full access to the 7 mile WHITE BEAUTIFUL SANDY BEACH! They have free continental breakfast, shuttles, and free WiFi. The connection is great! Unlike Tortuga, where it kept going out! The woman even let us check in 3hrs early since we had all our stuff plus the groceries we bought. It all boils down to, if you are not paying out of pocket or own a room at The Morritt's Tortuga, you will not receive 5 star treatment and they will RAPE your pockets! I do not EVER want to have to go on vacation and be made to pay for electricity! It was also a lesson learned for my husband and I, research and read EVERYTHING before booking. My husband doesn't even want to use the...
Read moreI am not an owner, but I was here with one. My first visit to Grand Cayman, his 5th. The suite looks nice, but appearance isn't always actual. All appliances worked. The shower was changed from a small unit to a large unit with a dual wall and ceiling rain shower fixture and looked nice, complete with a travertine bench. Nope, that couple shower was just for looks. The water pressure was very low and the wall fixture trickled out. The pressure barely gets you wet or rinses out shampoo. The ceiling fixture is way too high and needs to be lowered by at least a foot. The water that comes out warm is cold when it hits you. You cannot have both fixtures on, it is one or the other. There is only a glass surround and no door or curtain, so if the bedroom door is open, the shower is in view from the living area. The lights are not configured right and light up the whole left side of the room like spot lights. I unscrewed lights above the mirror. The recessed lights are too bright and are on the same switch. The living area furniture looks comfortable, but is not. Very flat cushions. The TV had only a Universal remote and you couldn't change the input, No DVD player and you couldn't attach a USB stick. The Internet is throttled down so slowly and kept cutting out. You can pay for faster, for 24 hrs, but as an owner it should be included. The tile floor is white and dirty. I had to clean my feet all day. There was renovation construction on the 1st floor that reverberated throughout the building. 2 units got moved. We asked, but the unit offered was of much lesser quality. Having a hammer drill running for hours was not fun. They did start later after we complained. The sound from above travels if they scrape or drag furniture across the floor, or walk like elephants. The bed needed a good mattress pad or topper, better quality sheets (Morritts are 60/40 I will bring our own next time)
The Fitness center moved into the dark basement area (con) and is supposed to be open until 9. We went at 6pm and had to get someone to unlock it. We were told that " housekeeping closed it down. That we could come back the next day." No, unlock it and be open the hours posted. That was inconvenient and rude.
Pro: Ocean view, nice breeze Star gazing from the deck Great deck (3rd fl) Decent bath towels (not beach) Well stocked kitchen supplies Washer/Dryer in unit
Con: construction noise Internet throttling MBR Shower situation 2nd bathroom weak shower Furniture looks comfortable, not for long Over priced bland breakfast You are charged for electricity FYI
Don't forget coffee filters, I found some from a previous occupancy. We bought some down the street at Fosters before I found them over the microwave.
We rented a car and went all over the island. Be careful of the speed limit, no one drives it. They chickens are always in the road, too. The speed limit is MPH and the car was in KM. It's only a suggestion since people fly by driving.
The East end is nice and quiet. Rum Point is a nice day trip. The Blow Holes is about 20min away
Georgetown and Seven Mile Beach is 45-60 minutes away.
Easy snorkeling at the dock and Mimi's. It was great to watch the fish swarm.
Fosters market is just down the road for very overpriced groceries. They really hit the tourists with...
Read moreBeautiful resort, right on the beach, but some clear problems for sure. For one, our gorgeous room overlooking the beach immediately smelled of mold (distinctly not the sargassum, which is shoveled up from the beach every morning) covered up in a soapy perfume odor as soon as we walked in... And I feel this symbolises the greater experience at Morritt's.
Generally the staff is extremely courteous and will go out of their way to help or say hello, but something is clearly rotten on the underside, which I'll get into: WiFi is "free" for up to 3 devices, but limited to roughly 20KB/s according to my testing (and that's a very generous estimate). In other words, text-only email or web pages will take on the order of minutes to load... Don't even think about pictures or Facebook. But not to worry--you can always upgrade to "premium" WiFi for about $20USD per day PER DEVICE (so they're asking $300+ just for the most basic internet for a family of 4 for a week, and god forbid anyone brought a laptop because of course that's extra).
All hope is not lost though, the concierge will happily "upgrade" your internet at no cost, if you agree to sit through a "45 minute presentation" that will no doubt turn into a high-pressure timeshare sales pitch fraught with sob stories and false promises... I've had my fair share of these, and they're never "45 minutes," so no thank you. As soon as Jill, an older British woman, heard us say "honestly we're not interested in another timeshare pitch," her face immediately turned, and it was clear she wanted nothing to do with us as I'm sure her salary is commission-based.
Now I don't want to sound cynical, but experience has taught me there is always reasoning behind ridiculous resort shenanigans, and I don't believe this place is an exception. You will be provided with more activities and suggestions than you can handle, but unless you activate roaming on your phone you effectively have absolutely no other avenue to research what's going on around the island, or what "reasonable" prices really are--this resort honestly seems out for a monopoly business model, and like any good authoritarian must necessarily restrict all other means of information besides itself...
For instance, Jill was "kind" enough to offer us a generous 50% discount on swimming with the turtles, complete with scribbling out the $140/pp listed price of the brochure she showed... yet of course that was until we decided to walk about 10 meters out to the dive shop on premises and saw exactly the same stock photo brochures advertising exactly the same activity at $85, so more like a $15/pp discount, well thanks anyway Jill.
In short, I wouldn't recommend this resort unless you want to be witheld basic human rights lest you concede to be bombarded with high pressure timeshare pitches... but if you have a strong will, or first buy a local prepaid SIM card I suppose it's generally acceptable... Just be forewarned: you're not the customer--you're...
