Melimoyu Lodge Fly Fishing — Hotel in Cisnes

The setting is a pristine wilderness that is almost as far from the maddening crowds as one can get but it didn’t feel that way. Luxury in the wild is the best way to describe Mellimoyu Lodge. I have been to a number of remote wilderness locations so I understand how difficult it is run a business in such areas. That being said I am compelled to tell you that my wife and I were so pleasantly surprised at the high quality of everything that we felt like we were in a dream. From the architecture to the furniture, artwork and to the impeccably manicured grounds the facility was perfection only magnified by your most excellent staff and the surreal geography, but the experience started early. Puerto Montt, being a popular domestic destination was a quick easy trip from Santiago. From that point everything else had already been arranged for us by Stephanie. This included the overnight stay in the scenic Puerto Varas, the flight to and from Chaiten, and the epic ride through pristine valleys of southern Chile. Shortly after our arrival at the Lodge we were ushered to one of the wood fired hot tubs set above the rushing Mellimoyu River where an impeccably prepared classic regional cocktail awaited us. The heat of the water and the beverage along with the sound of the river eliminated all the pent up stress of a long air travel. We spent most of our time on the river I think because it was the best way not only to see the stunning landscape but it was the road to walks on gravel bars, hidden ruins and the remarkable trail through the dense rainforest vegetation to the natural hot springs. I certainly know how to fish but it would be accurate to say that I am not an avid fisherman. Consequently, I hadn’t planned to to do much but it was so enjoyable being on the river with Martin and Rubin I found that I couldn’t resist the urge to cast, reel then cast again. Even my wife who had never touched fishing gear before became hooked and after some gentle coaching from Martin she became quite proficient and successful. Our main quary were King salmon but being late in the season our efforts were not productive. The plentiful Brown and Rainbow trout on the other hand, were big and aggressive so there was a lot of fun even though we used jumbo lures designed to attract Kings.
