I lived nearby when this hotel was being built. I remember it going up and I remember it being a big deal. It's obviously seen better days. The carpet was filthy and even the bath towels were a bit ragged, they needed to be replaced 2 years ago. The giant window provided a wonderful view of the Summer Palace in the day, and at night it ensured that the room was frigid. In the loft, it was hot and below it was freezing and there was no way to resolve this problem. I could see this as an option if you're staying for a few months and need some extra space, but even then, the rooms should probably be gutted. It's the small things as well, the refusal to provide more than 2 bottles of water per day. The elevator not being level with the floor, the weird bathroom upstairs with an all glass wall (why?). The kids were looking forward to swimming, but the pool and gym were closed for renovation, there was no notification of this prior. The front desk was confused by the lack of a Chinese address when we were checking in, which was the only time in the entire trip this was asked for. This is also rather inconvenient for taxis, as it's extra driving to get in, and the pickup location is not visible. Most don't want to bother driving in to drop off. It's a place that has seen better days and those days were 10+ years ago. Shame it's not been maintained as well as it...
Read moreI have been a regular at Ariva for last 10 years. It’s a 4 star property which you could easily mistake for 5 star, but that was before the pandemic. After the pandemic, their service quality had dropped significantly. We returned to China and had 5 pieces of big suitcase plus additional hand luggage. Guess what, we were told there is no person who can help us to carry the luggage to our rooms. After repeated reminder, one boy named Tommy who looked like a trainee helped to carry the luggage to the room. Same thing happened at checkout. The reception person was straight and honest “we don’t have a person available who can help you with the luggage”. I had to take 4 rounds to carry the luggage down by myself. And we are talking of a property which is rated as 4 star!!I felt sad, perhaps the hotel had a hard time during the pandemic and was still recovering from bad financial situation that they don’t have full service staff yet. The reception staff, all were trainees from colleges. In terms of facilities, its still a good place. They have swimming pool, gym, spa and every room I have stayed here is spacious and has a bathtub. I have always loved their Aviva center on 6th floor which has DIY kitchen and laundry area which helps if you are staying for long duration or are traveling with kids. I haven’t lost faith and hope Ariva will have its glory...
Read moreI arrived 7 months pregnant; their economical rooms are "health beds" without padding. After two sleepless nights, I asked to upgrade my room to one of the suites I stayed in previously that had softer beds. The service desk insisted all the beds were the same. They had better suites available for two nights, but I wouldn't be allowed to stay in them because my trip was longer than two nights. The manager also refused; telling me to sleep on pillows (I did try this earlier, and it didn't work). He also said my entire trip had to be booked in the same room, I couldn't even book ONE night in an upgraded suite. It's already dark, heavy rain; I had to walk myself and my suitcase out into the street (all taxis taken due to the bad weather). Despite not providing any sleep for two nights, they made me pay for the third night (that I didn't even use) because it was already past 6pm. I had no idea where I was going to go. It was such a traumatic experience, I finally decided to write this review. I had to call my boss, and travel via subway to a different hotel (with MUCH more comfortable beds). Take your business to Park Plaza Hotel instead of Ariva; if you care about how hotels should treat their customers. It took me three years to finally decide to write this review; I hope I never have to think of Ariva...
