We had a wonderful stay in Beijing at Marco Polo hotel. ||Susie and the staff took good care of us, and we would of course gladly come back to see more of Beijing.||It is a foreigner friendly hotel with beautiful rooms, rather comfy and couple friendly bed, a swimming pool (hot and cold, bring a swimming cap), hot tub, and a metro line 15 station Anli Road walking distance away. ||We were able to visit Tiananmen Square (book an appointment and be aware of Monday closing time), Temple of Heaven (book tickets), and The Great Wall Badaling (book tickets - e.g on Trip.com, get on bus 877 in and out) in 4 days on 144 hour visa-free entry permit. This is available to a lot of passport holders incl. Europeans, and it is enough time to get a taste of China!||Forbidden City requires a booking a week ahead of time and it is a difficult to get them. We could not get in. I recommend a tour that will take care of everything.||If you wish to do the same, bring your passport, tickets to your next destination (outside of China - can be on a separate booking from the arrival ticket), and a booking to this hotel, and show all of this in both airports (towards and in Beijing). Fill in an arrival card by the counter towards immigration. Get a sticker and show it on your way in. Don't forget to come back within 5 days!||I recommend to get a Chinese number (physical SIM) to register with on Alipay and WeChat. You can then use these apps to do almost anything, incl. travel and bookings in Beijing. We used DiDi to taxi around when necessary. Screen Translate and Microsoft Translate are essential to translate all the Chinese on your phone screen and voice- communicate.||Good luck and thank you Marco Polo...
Read moreI travel a lot and my impression is that the hotel was a tired looking 'slipped from grace' place. In China the star system is never up to the same system internationally. Marco polo beijing would be 3 starIn room:1. Mould above shower2. Old faded taps3. Fridge not working 4. A/C didn't work5. No milk for complimentary teas/coffees6. Bathroom sink very slow to drainFirst room had A/C not working so we were moved to another room which also.didn't work.Told them about fridge-no actionAsked re milk- told to go across road and buy my ownAsked re sink. Grumpy guy came, said "it still works" and rushed off. It was still slow which means other people's waste was occluding it stillGeneral appearance from staff was that they were tired of complaints and therefore ignored them. Carpet in front of concierge desk summed up hotel; tired, worn out and in need of urgent care. When I mentioned it to a staff member he said "yes it looks terrible but what can you do?" and shrugged his shoulders Breakfast was very good but nothing else cam close to what Marco Polo pretends to be.The price I paid should have been halved at least. I will never go back and will evermore avoid...
Read moreAbsolutely horrible room. "Five star" with terrible service.
We stayed for 2 nights. The room had many maintenance and housekeeping issues, most notably the power plug near the pillow was not working and kept switching on and off. Our first night at the hotel, the sewage of the shower was full of hairs, and we found a small cockroach near the fridge, proving that the hotel had bad housekeeping standards.
On our second night, My father attempted to turn on the TV and watch the news, but the remote was not responsive and did not work. We called the front desk and they sent a man, turning on the TV and left, not answering to our questions. We then called them again, when my father realised that the receiver was on the side.
This was totally not acceptable, as who would control the TV from the side but not from the bed??? We called that same person again, and after telling him he seemed to only realise and then took the receiver out.
Terrible room maintenance and housekeeping, bad service, but location was quite ideal and the subway and bus...
