Conclusion:Great hotel, service and facilities, but the noisy environment (firework, quads, beach ktv etc) makes it unattractive for a relaxing or romantic weekend get-away. I would try again during weekdays.Location:The Dusit Thani is located in Shuangyuewan, which is a 50min taxi ride from Gaotie station Huidong. The hotel is located at the main beach next to the Crown Plaza Complex and a few more large-scale apartment complexes. Environment:Driving along the dirty and under-construction mainroad, I wasn’t expecting a 5 star hotel till we turned left into a little gate. The Dusat Thani welcomed us with a friendly and pro-active concierges service, short waiting time for check-in (3pm). The hotels decoration reminds me on Thailand with its wooden elements and natural colour tones. Positive first impression. On the backside of the hotel is a dusty village road with plenty of seafood restaurants sitting opposite the roadside. Small convenience stores can be found outside the gate. The firework is nice to see for 15min, but not through the whole night. Being on the balcony or bathtub, we cannot hear our own words and the fireworks are crazy loud making us shaking. The beach is calm till 3/4pm, then its getting crowded and the people drive quads 10cm away from your sunbed, and jetskis come and go from the beach making it dangerous to swim as people seems to have no control over their rented toys.Room:The room is spacious and I do like the decoration. Shower and toilette are separate. Our room had a bathtub on the balcony which comes along with some seasalt. Great atmospheres. The hotel room included 1 large towel per person, which is not sufficient as we used it for showering, the beach, and the pool. Basically, it was wet the whole day. So, we asked for 2 more large towels to be added. Beach:The hotel beach is probably the cleanest and well maintained. The sand is rather rough and contains many shells, so I suggest kids to wear shoes when playing and running. After walking left and right along the beach, you will find lot of rubbish, bottles, firework leftovers and glass/porcelain parts on the beach. At night time, many beach segments turn into BBQ (Shaokao) and outdoor KTV areas with loud music and fireworks from 7pm till early morning.Sunbeds are free at the hotel beach, towels will not be provided at pool and beach.Facilities:The hotel offers 2 major outdoor pool areas, a main pool with 2-3 pools including one overlooking the beach, and 1 infinity pool on 31F which offers great views after 5pm. Food:The hotel has a seaview bar on 1F which offers drinks and small snacks. The breakfast restaurant is located on groundfloor at tower 2 and serving up to 10:30am. Apart from common Chinese dishes, I am interested in the continental food variety, here the hotel was offering toast, "french style" baguette and 4 kinds of pretty yummy jams. I could not find any cheese and cold cut at all. Also, the hotel offered fresh salad buffet with a great variety including green/black olives and different dressings. People could order a fresh omlette/eggs, noodles and freshly baked waffles/pancakes, which all had a good taste. The 2 coffee machines were busy all the time and the taste was more like a Chinese instant coffee. As they used coffee beans, I would believe the right setting may improve the quality significantly. For a 5-star hotel, I would expect some cold-cut and fresh orange/fruit juice, which I could not find. Also, there is a convenience store located on 1F tower 2, and also a smaller one directly accessible from the beach.(background: European but communicate fluently with...

Read moreIf you have seen the British movie ‘Carry On Abroad’, then that’s all you need to know. Check in was slow as we were a group of 19 foreigners, but only one person who could speak English. Unfortunately, as there were other front desk staff that had no guests but were unable to serve us or help the one staff member to speed along the service. The beds were amazing! A great night sleep. Great that we were able to upgrade to a higher floor suite, for some of us in the group they were able to receive this for free while others paid. The hotel was not at full capacity. The room was beautifully designed and put together. However, cleanliness is not up to standard. The smell of mold hit us as we opened the door. And the dirty sink and bath made me with I brought my cleaning supplies. There was some creamy product smeared on the wall in the shower as well as cobwebs in corners. The cups and glasses needed to be washed before using too. The pools were beautifully designed. But again maintenance is low on the priority list at this hotel. The pool had a lot of loose tiles, the kids were collecting them. The wood around the pool for walking needs care as a person could trip. They also need cleaning too. The service was just ok. But then the typhoon came in, all recreation outside shut down. It would have been nice to have had some notice. Inside there is a movie theatre, but no English. There are KTV rooms and our group was asking for a way to hook up an English movie as we had 6 kids in total. There were no accommodations for our needs. We were told to use the TV in our rooms. But again no English. Luckily the kids had fun in the ball pit. And tried their hand at ping pong and pool. With the typhoon came lots of rain. So buckets were everywhere for the leaks. I do recommend the area where building one guests need to walk towards the lobby be fixed. There is a ramp down to the doors for the walkway that turned into a river, therefore flooding the walkway. Staff spent a lot of time mopping it up, using sandbags and so on. One elevator in building one had a leak too, and one elevator in building had smoke coming from the ceiling. These experiences made it feel unsafe. Food was good. Great selection for all tastes. Would like to have had signs in different languages. There were other foreigners there too, even Koreans! The only issue was the rat that ran under our table. The manager that we were speaking with about leaving early and getting our money back had zero compassion. And even mentioned calling the police. Not sure why. Quite shocking really. Dusit Thani Sandlewoods has been a name I regarded quite highly and think of great service. I do think if the weather was better, our stay would have been better. And probably so. However, the hotel needs to have a rainy day plan. They need to recognize that there are guests that can’t speak or read Chinese. We are paying guests too. I do want to say thank you to Glory, she was amazing at helping us. We did receive our money back from Trip.com, but not the upgrade money from the hotel. So really, the hotel lied about that. This hotel has...
