I spent one night here and found the hotel to be typical of University Guesthouses (宾馆). Check-in can be slow and so is check-out if others are being processed. The decor of the lobby is plain. The upstairs restaurant has good food but nothing spectacular. Breakfast is the usual Chinese breakfast fare. I didn't try the coffee.||||My room was comfortable. Softer mattress than I usually experience in Chinese University Guesthouses. Fan delivering heat to the room was noisy even on the low setting but I could shut it off so had a quiet room. TV doesn't have international stations. Internet didn't work in my room - too slow to connect - but the lobby has good free internet so I did my work there. Someone who seems like a manager talks a lot to various people and talks really loudly and doesn't seem to realize that his conversation doesn't need to be broadcast at 100 decibels to everyone in or near the lobby. The staff could benefit from customer service training.||||Back to the room. It was clean. Shower delivered high-pressure hot water. No complaints there. Usual packages of toothbrush, shower cap etc. provided as well as two bottles of good water. Hotel is close to Fudan University so convenient plus a short walk to University (大学) Avenue. Also a short walk to Wanda Plaza and the many shops and restaurants nearby.||||I rate the hotel average. Convenience, comfort and cleanliness are strong; noisy lobby, slow check-in and check-out, and poor internet in...
Read moreI'll lead off with the one negative experience we had of the Yanyuan Hotel. Initially we were placed in a ground-floor room next to the emergency exit door. By evening the room was SWARMING with mosquitoes -- dozens of them. Our University hosts, however, were able to have us moved to the eighth floor. There we had no problems whatsoever. My review is based on our 8th floor experience, not on our initial room.||||The hotel is near the Jiangwan Stadium metro station. Between the station and the hotel is a major upscale shopping center called Wanda. Wanda has a full range of local and international brands, a large food center, a movie theater, and a WalMart. Also directly across the street from the hotel is a fruit stand that's open late, and all along the (busy but quiet at night) road on which the hotel is located there are street vendors selling meals until after midnight.||||The hotel itself is a pretty standard motel, spacious and reasonably well-furnished. The daytime managers speak English but the nighttime and other staff do not. The hotel does accept Visa cards (not everyone in China does). The only downside of the hotel is that smoking is allowed in all rooms, but our room did not smell of smoke. Overall, once our room was changed we were very satisfied -- and we never saw another mosquito over the course of our...
Read moreAs part of a professional exchange program with Fudan University, I stayed at this hotel for two weeks and it was an ideal location for daily campus visits and access to the vibrant but relatively quiet neighbourhood. ||||My room was on the ground floor which was fine, although sometimes I could smell cigarette smoke coming in from outside the building - and possibly inside - you can still smoke in most places in China. Next time, I would ask to be moved to the 1, 2 or 3 floor. ||||The bed was big with clean linen, but it was very firm - too firm for me normally but, given the sheets were so fresh, it was fine. The room was cleaned daily, with drinking water and towels refreshed. ||||Complimentary breakfast was very Chinese - I know, I'm in China. It could have been improved with a few alternative options in addition to toast with jam. Fruit would have been a blessing. I'm not particularly fussy, but once I found a French cafe around the corner in week 2, I found it hard to return. The adjacent restaurant is always busy for lunches / dinners and is yummy - they may have extra breakfast options too. ||||TV stations were limited and no in-house movie options, Wifi was ok some days and terrible on others. ||||Overall, the location and cleanliness, and friendly staff (limited English) made up for...
