Check-in experience was awful, I had just arrived from the airport after a stressful flight. There were two receptionists who handled my check-in, the one who took charge kept on coughing out without putting the hand in front of her mouth. This was on the 23rd of January, already at the beginning of the coronavirus issue. I put back on my mask I was obviously even more worried and couldn't believe this lack of common sense to not do that in front of a foreign guest. ||||Next I was not told about my benefits regarding the club- lounge and was actually pushed to buy the breakfast package while it was already included. ||||it is only the next day at 11 am I called to make sure I did have it in my booking but I already lost the breakfast by then. The receptionist gentleman did not understand why her colleague had not informed me of my benefits but nonetheless nothing was offered to arrange a mistake done on their part but a little "sorry Sir".||||Multiple times, I went to the front desk to find out only one person per shift spoke English. For a Marriott property, this is quite surprising to say the least. No concierges spoke english whatsoever. ||||The positive note comes from the cleanliness of the hotel room on a daily basis and shoutout to the Club lounge staff who were friendly and very...
Read moreUnfortunately we did not enjoy our experience at the Marriott Riverside Hotel in Shanghai. First, the rooms were extremely warm, 23.5 degrees Celsius during the night is too hot for sleeping and was uncomfortable to say the least. The hotel staff was notified, and nothing was solved other than we got a fan delivered to our room. After reading reviews about this same issue from 2015 it is unacceptable that the problem had not been fixed. After four nights of sleeping in these conditions, I was ready for home. Another reason we would not recommend this hotel is that the Lounge closed down earlier than we were told and even earlier than what was advertised on the website. Upon check in, the staff told us the Executive Lounge closed at 9:00pm. When we arrived the first night after dinner for a post dinner cocktail, there were no drinks available after 8:30, with food taken down even earlier than that. This was disappointing, especially when we paid extra for the club floor amenities. The final reason we will not be back to this Marriott is because of the location. If you are planning to spend time in the heart of Shanghai and enjoy all of the popular hot spots, this hotel is about a 30-40 minute Didi ride. There are so many other hotel options to choose from, don't bother...
Read moreIf you're going to Shanghai for business, and anticipate having to spend a lot of time in your room, this hotel is a solid choice. My room was spacious and comfortable, with reliable internet. Room service was good, and the lobby lounge was a pleasant spot to meet clients and friends, and enjoy a change of scenery while working -- I greatly appreciated the uninterrupted internet connection as I went back and forth to my room.
The hotel's big drawback is its remote location. The nearest metro station is about a 20-minute walk away, and it's not always easy to find a taxi (don't be fooled by all the taxis idling in the vicinity; most of them are waiting for pre-booked fares). To my knowledge, there was no shuttle service of any kind (and if there is, they really need to do a better job advertising it).
However, if you need to hole up in your room to get some work done, or if you are looking for a place to host a conference, this hotel would be a great choice. In any case, the river views compensate somewhat for the...
