Location is great, we could walk from the main railway station with our 2 large luggagges to reach the hotel. Location is great, near the shopping street including the basement mall where there are many eating places. ||Room was ok, though everything about the hotel is really dated, its time for some refresh imo. I like the good variety of breakfast options.||The safe inside the room was rather erratic, sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't work. We stayed at room 1847 (from 30th Jun) which is near the end of corridor, during our 3nights stay, there were loud TV noises and loud chatters coming from the end of the corridor the entire day, from morning till evening, we initially thought its the staff room where hotel staff are resting, watching TV, chit chatting etc so we ignored it. On our last day, we realised that its actually occupied by a guest when I saw 2 men standing outside the room and seems to be "negotiating" something with a loud speaking mid-age lady who was standing outside the room. I felt uncomfortable so walked towards that room (room 1851) when the 2 men left. The room door was left wide opened, sound from TV blasting as usual, and there was even a "private" mat placed in front of the door as if its someone's "home". I asked the lady if she's doing business there and she said no and asked me not to worry coz she's a regular guest there (dont quite understand what she was implying though). I kindly asked her to lower her TV volume or to close the her room door, which she kindly complied. ||Anyway, this is my 1st stay in Jen. I never thought Jen is the budget arm of Shangrila, just thought its just a mid-range sister brand. As a Golden Circle Jade member, I was hoping to get at least some upgrade at check in, but the check in lady said nope unless I am a diamond tier. So I asked her if Jade is therefore meaningless tier with zero benefit and interestingly she agreed with me! well, I guess Golden circle tier will only get recognised at a proper Shangrila hotel, hence I viewed Jen more a budget hotel (similar to Scoots vs SQ). I even had to argue with the check in lady who didn't check my reservation properly and said that my room didn't come with breakfast when I had clearly booked a rate that come...

Read moreStaying at the Jen Hotel in Shenyang was not a good experience, despite its good location. At check-in time we were asked to leave a deposit equivalent to 100% of the pre-paid hotel stay. This requirement was not described in the hotel reservation, or at least not easy to be found. This was the first time that I experienced this having travelled to several countries. The hotel manager had to personally waive this requirement as we didn't think it was applicable. On the first night my wife started feeling itchy for no apparent reason. On the second night she developed a severe alergic reaction with rashes all over the body that caused her to go to the hospital at 1:30 am. We started suspecting that the source of allergy was the forced ventilation combined with the lack of fresh air that was moving impurities from the soiled carpet that seems to be in need of steam cleaning. When we got back to the hotel the following day -we were unable to contact the hotel by phone earlier because the only telephone number listed seemed to be out of service- we requested that the room window be opened. Things then started to get better for my wife and she was able to stay in the room without...
