Grand Mercure Xiamen Downtown — Hotel in Xiamen

Came to Xiamen for work and stayed at Mercure. Distance from Airport was very short (only 20 minute ride). Location of Hotel was close most things, but with taxi you reach most of the interesting places in less than 20 minutes. Hotel was really nice and high standard. However the corridors had permanent carpets installed and the room also partially had carpets. I prefer clean wood or stone floor. Easier to keep clean, even though Mercure ws spotlessly clean. Reception had very friendly staff who helped you even beyond their obligation - thanks, but not all speak English (would expect that by now at a luxury hotel). It did not give me any problems though. Taxi is fantastically cheap and most of the time there is no need to hazzle. Then just take another taxi.For attractions: GulanYu Island was a nice visit, but expect to stay there all day if you do not want to run. Ordering tickets was also horribly difficult and not for non-chinese tourists. A Chinese friend need to do the booking. Well located in downtown Xiamen. Exquisite Duplex suite was a nice big room and very comfortable. Breakfast was okay. The biggest issue we faced was that very few of the staff spoke English which made the stay very difficult to get information and other things to meet our needs. Would have expected that a hotel of this level in the hospitality industry and catering to people from around the world would have had more multi lingual available to help guests. At checkout we were told that we needed to go to Terminal 4 to catch our flight with China Southern. The hotel room is very clean and spacious, the entrance area is the business desk area so the bedroom and bathroom feels separate from the corridor and adds a roomier feel. Housekeeping was excellent and even gave extra water bottles during my stay. Room also came with some extra complimentary beverages.Location is good, some quiet areas around the hotel during the daytime, as they are bars at night, hotel is near the metro and metro has an exit to a shopping mall. Taxi is easy to get as it is near a big main road. Only problem is sometimes I feel like soundproofing can be better, it is easy to hear people in the corridor.
