Paradise! Exactly like the photos! A beautiful two days, just wish I had stayed longer. A beautiful pool with views of the Caribbean, plenty of loungers at the pool and loungers, umbrellas and hammocks on the beach. Cute working space above reception. Lots of bathrooms and showers that were constantly being cleaned by staff. Friendly staff - shoutout to the barman, Angie at reception, Pedro for vibes & yoga and Mari for vibes & salsa! There was lots of attention to detail here / washing lines in the sun for wet clothes, water coolers placed at many spots on the property (you all pay 3,000 COP per day for the use of unlimited water) and there was always boiling water and coffee at the bar. A decent restaurant menu - I loved the local fish stew. If you want an expresso coffee and baked good, I highly recommend the Sor y Pan which is a 20 min walk back on the highway. You can also walk to Los Hermanos/Masaya/Costeno beach if you want a change of scene for a drink or meal if you’re staying longer. I was there for a really fun salsa and reggaeton dance vibes class and the night I left there was bingo on. Other activities were karaoke, volleyball, ping pong and I did yoga at the pool (it’s most mornings 8am), there is also yoga some afternoons at 5pm on the jungle deck. Decent mats and yoga blocks are provided.
What I absolutely loved about Bohemia beach and what I was coming for - YOU CAN HEAR THE SOUND OF THE OCEAN AT NIGHT 💙 there is NO doof doof doof of music beating from anywhere else (palomino was impossible to be with beach views and not have the beach life hostel horrendous techno beats all night) - but the sound of the waves here is louder than any nearby beach parties (and both hermanos and costeno had parties on nights I was there which I couldn’t hear in an open dorm!) Bohemia beach plays music but it ends around 11pm unless they have an advertised party on a particular night with a DJ coming - you can check with them on WhatsApp before booking a Saturday night. So I highly recommend Bohemia beach if you like to sleep with the sound of the waves.
I chose the jungle dorm and LOVED IT! we never used the fans at night as it does cool down and had the ocean breeze, cicadas and waves with the scenic jungle leaves around us. I love this style of sleeping. bring an eye mask and ear plugs as with it being no walls you may have different levels of light and noise to what you’re used to. The bunks did have curtains along the sides, I hung my towel on one end. Each bed had a locker with a few shelves. Plug points are a bit scarce on the backs of each pillar (not in your bed) but we all made do with charging devices - it wasn’t a big issue.
Personally I think the jungle dorm was naturally cooler than being in the ground floor dorm room with a noisy fan having to be on. (Haha I am not a fan of noisy fans 😂) There were only a few moths but I wasn’t bothered by bugs in open air. The Mira dorm is one level above the jungle dorm. Its benefit is a guaranteed no one above you on a bunk bed as it’s all single beds, and the view is amazing , BUT it felt much stuffier up there - you need the fans on as only one end is open and the sides are closed by the A frame roof. The other end facing the ocean is closed off so you also can’t see the pool or sea (also means no through breeze). Mira dorm is much darker at night if you like a dark sleep. So that description should help anyone chose a dorm option that suits them.
Honestly couldn’t recommend Bohemia beach enough for anyone who wants the vibe of having activities and people around if you’re a solo traveler, but not hectic music at night when you’re trying to sleep. If you like a party, there were always people going to the parties at the other hostels nearby - Pedro and Mari the Bohemia beach volunteers also go to them - so don’t let my descriptions of it being quiet at night put you off going if you...
Read moreWe visited Bohemia during our travels around Colombia after seeing plenty of recent content on Instagram but sadly we were very dissapointed. ||The vibes we read about - a friendly place with awesome staff and good location was not anything that we experienced.||On arrival the staff were nice but that was about it. The bar staff were some of the rudest individuals I have met during my travels. Everything was an effort for them and the vibe was so clique between long stayers/staff that it was impossible not to feel excluded. ||The food was average but the service was awful. You basically order your food (for restaurant prices) and have to wait around by a window for someone to shout your name out and then go and collect it. I would understand if it was a one man band place but meanwhile the bar staff were sat around chatting to their mates. We ended up going next door to the right along the beach to a lovely restaurant blue mango (would recommend!)||The location is obviously beautiful but as a result of the storms the beach is filled with wood and debris. I know if it was my place I would have made some effort to keep clear the section in front of the hostel - especially given the lack of a pool - but that didn't seem to be the case at all. Additionally, given the lack of access to the sea/beach due to the debris in the water and sand you would think that a few activities or something wouldn't go a miss but unfortunately, despite the owner playing volleyball with some of the staff, we were again left feeling excluded and somewhat bored.||The rooms are nice (we stayed in a tent) but nothing to write home about. They offer laundry service but, despite filling out basket and leaving it as directed by the sign in the room it was never collected and we had to take it unwashed on with us.||On leaving the bill had several mistakes in including attempting to charge us double for the whole of the first day. They also add on 3000 pesos for water and coffee for every day you are there even if you only arrive late in the afternoon and leave at 11am! We were told about the extra charge on arrival but it wasn't a choice, just a statement. ||Overall very dissapointing for somewhere we were so excited to visit. We understand that it is so different being post pandemic but just simple things like making guests feel included would have gone a long long way.||My advice would be to head down to costeno beach instead. We went there for the day and wished we had stayed there it...
Read moreMy partner and I stayed 3 nights at Bohemia Beach, and it wasn't really what we were expecting.
Staff are friendly, and their design of the common areas has a nice and relaxed vibe, we especially liked the table tennis table in the sand near the bar. Also the tables to eat and drink with a view of the ocean are nice.
However they market this place as a bit of an "everything" place, it has a co-working space, a bar with party nights, they help with tour organisation, they have morning yoga for 10 mil pesos. It seems like they don't know if they want to be a party place or a vacation chill out place.
But if your planning to be active and go to Tayrona, and/or explore the surrounds with Bohemia as your chilled base - be aware that all of the solo/couple glamping cabins are within 20 meters of the bar. So it is not quiet, on Tuesday nights there is a loud techno music that goes until 1am and every other night expect to hear music till 11.30pm, alongside people drinking at the bar. I found this design to be annoying to have to sleep so close to a lively bar. For example the day after hiking in Tayrona I was exhausted and wanted to sleep early, but it wasn't possible due to the noise of the bar. I was even using earplugs but the bass goes straight through the earplugs. It's not that I mind people partying, I just don't want to be paying a premium to sleep 20 meters from a party when my vacation goals are moreso to explore and embrace the region.
Also there are frequent blackouts due to the generator failing if you are planning to use the co-working facilities, as there is no real mobile internet reception, and the WiFi fails with the blackouts.
The mosquito nets could do a better job of sealing all the holes in the tents as well.
The place and food is reasonably expensive (although not so bad when compared to other places nearby). And I like the beach vibe they are trying to go for. But the execution left a lot to be desired.
However the staff were great, and I cannot fault them.
Also there is some plastic pollution on the beach, it would be nice to see these beach hotels (not just Bohemia) who are benefiting from the capitalistic effects of having a popular business on a Caribbean beach, to give a little bit back to the eco-systems and keep the beaches clean.
I don't normally like leaving reviews like this, but given the experience I felt it prudent to share...
