Spent a week in San Gil in March 2011 to enjoy whitewater rafting, hiking, and rappelling in this gorgeous region. I selected Hotel Verano because it was new and had a pool and air conditioning. A family owns the place and a 20-something man named Jon, a member of the family, serves as General Manager. The hotel is a short cab ride outside of town in a quiet beatiful area on the Rio Fonce (Fonce River). Views from every room of the river and pool are beautiful. My room was simple but very clean and bright. I had a color flat screen TV (Colombian TV only), air conditioning and a safe. Private bathroom was clean and brand new. One major complaint: As is typical in this region, the hotel did not have hot water in the sink or shower. The GM told me that the building is "hot water ready", but that the actual heaters were being manufactured. In fairness, my travel agent told me that it is very difficult to find hotels with hot water in the area. The hotel did offer to bring me hot water from the kitchen for washing, but it was fine as is. The hotel also had free wi-fi in the reception area and wonderful food. I did not realize that breakfast and either lunch or dinner were included in my very cheap rate. Breakfast was very substantial--coffee, fresh juice, fruit, bread, arepas, and eggs with cheese or ham. I was brave and tried the local favorite "Caldo Santander", a hot breakfast soup of chicken soup, cilantro and eggs. Lunch was "anything I wanted", typically a sauteed chicken breast with salad, fries, and beer. The staff was wonderful and was fascinated to meet an USA citizen. On my last night, Jon took me out for dinner in town on his motorcycle--very cool. San Gil is amazing for whitewater rafting (Fonce River, Chicamocha River, Suarez River), rappelling at the Juan Curi waterfall, hiking, and people-watching. The main square in San Gil is really vibrant and fun at night. Also took side trips to Barichara and Curiti. A great visit in a very remote part of the world for city...
Read moreI spent a few days here while friends were off doing adventures. This is a family owned and run property including the little one. Though I do not speak Spanish we had a tremendous time using google translator. The property offers a number of type of rooms. If you need air conditioning you need to request it. My room did not have air when I was in February and I was comfortable. ||||The fruit and vegetable plates they offered while I was there could have been from a 5star restaurant. Every morning they had a big cappuccino ready for me when...
Read moreWe stayed at Verano Hotel in San Gil, it was a very pleasant experience. Only flaw is the loud music that is played at the pool. The rooms are clean, cozy and there is a lovely light coming from stained glass windows. They should add a screen on the windows so visitors could open the windows without fearing mosquitos. Great breakfast, natural juice, and the waiters were very attentive. There was a charming garden near the pool, and the view...
