We have just returned from Costa Rica and spent eight nights at this great resort. We had such a brilliant time! We flew down via Stansa Air on a quick 40 min flight, to save us driving from San Jose. The resort organise a car to collect you from the airport (about 25 mins) and take you to Drake Bay. Once there, they collect you in a boat (remove shoes and socks to get in!) and then in five minutes you arrive at the hotel dock. There's a warm welcome with a cool drink on arrival. We were a family of four, with two adult sons, and stayed in two rooms. The rooms are simple in design, cleaned daily, with a huge bathroom, great shower, small fridge and air conditioning (which we were very appreciative of in the humid climate). We took a snorkelling trip out to Cano Island, a trip to the National Park and the Mangrove tour. In addition, we borrowed the kayaks and did part of the coastal walk. One of the staff kindly dropped us off by boat at a beach down the coast and we walked back enjoying the beautiful views. You can stop off at the beaches along the way for a quick dip in the ocean to cool off. A 15 min walk from the hotel brings you to Cocalito Beach which we loved. The sea is warm and sandy underfoot and macaws were flying above and chattering in the trees. We also enjoyed a bug hunt with Tracie at night - great fun. The staff are all so helpful, nothing was too much trouble and the trips are all efficiently organised. A big shout out to Alonso who looked after us so well at the bar and for mealtimes. We enjoyed his cocktails but our favourite was his Gin and Tonic! We enjoyed these in our favourite place in the bar, with a fantastic, ever changing view across the bay. (This is the only place where you can access wifi but who needs that in such a beautiful place!) Now on to the catering which is full board. Lots of choices for breakfast, fantastic tacos, salads for lunch and a three course meal every night. It was all delicious - we didn't have one meal that was not wonderful. Always different, beautifully prepared and presented. We loved it all! If you go on a trip they let you know if you are going to be back for lunch or eat out. Excursions are always by boat and fruit, water and cookies are provided. The trips started early - we would not normally have breakfast at 5.30 am but if you are going out and won't be back for lunch, we always took advantage of having something before. Although we were there for a week, we didn't struggle for things to do at all. All in all, a brilliant...
Read moreI will start this review with the caveat that Drake Bay is a remote place and your general expectations for luxury should be lowered slightly. With that said, Drake Bay Wilderness Resort is undoubtably the best piece of property in Drake Bay. The premises are stunning and have 270deg views of the bay. The rooms are basic but clean and have great A/C. Unfortunately some rooms are better than others, and after one night with a nice updated bathroom, we came back and were placed in a room with a very outdated and sad bathroom. The room also had no wifi. Reception did move us upon our request. Unfortunately, we had a few other issues with the reception, and we found them quite awkward, sometimes rude, and hard to deal with. They were not proactive with providing info about the resort, our excursions/timing/it’d interest/what to pack, and other details regarding the resort. Food was very average (breakfast was good and juices were always good) and my boyfriend and I needed to go to town for better food by the third night. All alcoholic drinks are close to $10.
For the location and views I’d recommend it, but not for longer than 1-2 nights. Staff is really accommodating for taking you into town on their boat which I appreciate. Also loved using the kayaks they had on hand!
The service staff was absolutely incredible and deserved their own shoutout. Easier to chat with than the reception. Thanks to Mauricio, Henry, and Alonso!!! They...
Read moreSitting in San Jose Airport 24 hours after leaving Drake Bay Wilderness Resort. Wish we had booked for longer. Accommodation great, and all sleep to the sound track of the Pacific. We had a brilliant walk in Sirena station Corcovado having stopped for a family of 3 Humpback whales on the way. The boat men were brilliant in choppy seas. Daniel our guide showed us so much, Tapir, ant eater, peccary, Toucan, the list goes on. Our snorkel trip around Isle de Cano was likewise led by Daniel - again fantastic despite a heavy storm. Seeing turtle at a respectful distance was special. Mauricio was also a great guide with us on both trips. The food was delicious and different each day. Always 3 options and the Sea Bass dish was fantastic. The staff on site were equally brilliant, so friendly, even taking us on a mid Imperial mini night safari when an emerald frog eating snake appeared and did what it's name suggests, before showing us a red-eyed tree frog( luckily not being consumed). Free use of the kayaks was great to paddle across the bay for a drink and up the adjoining River. Even laundry as part of the package was a real luxury. Every day here was one to savour, one to remember and one to put in the memory bank for a cold dark...
