Poponjoche Cabins gave us a totally relaxing, welcoming and economical stay in Caño Negro over a weekend's bird count for Jabiru. Run by local family, Douglas and Zinia, these simple, comfortable and spotless cabins were a perfect base for exploring the area. Showers with warm water, fans in the room, and most cabins have a terrace area outside looking over the gardens.||This is community rural tourism at its best: it's not smart but you'll get a warm welcome and wealth of local information. ||Douglas and son, Jesus, also run tours with their own boats plus plenty of other ideas if you aren't a fanatic birder!||For now, they don't provide meals, but some rooms have a fridge and ours (#3) had a kitchenette. There is a roofed rancho with BBQ and sink. But right next door is El Fogón restaurant which produced excellent meals during our stay (separate review).||The property leads down through the gardens full of fruit trees to the lagoon with its own jetty: great place to hang out at sunset to watch all the birds.||This is real Costa Rica. We'll...
Read moreDouglas and his wife run these spotless good value for money wooden cabins. #3 had a kitchenette and air conditioning . The roads aren’t the best to get there but definitely worth the drive . You feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. We turned up at nightfall and Douglas organised a 4h canoe trip for 6am the following day with Nayfrind who spoke good English and had a lot of local knowledge. |DO GET UP early as that’s when you’ll see the most wildlife. |Gliding silently up the river to the lagoon we were able to get so close to caymen, saw so, so many different birds including the kingfishers diving only a few metres from the canoe , sloths, monkeys, iguanas…. To top it we saw turtles too . |Canoeing back was much easier than against the current on the way out but it wasn’t a difficult paddle with two in the boat. |We had dinner , breakfast and lunch at the excellent Fogon restaurant literally next door which was inexpensive but quality and fresh. Had the local fish ( Tilapia) that they...
