I wanted an all-inclusive resort close to my home base an hour away and this was the closest one. My next choice was 4 hours away. I will be more certain next time. This place was awful! I signed up for premium and expected real VIP treatment. The restaurant for premium customers served a disgusting breakfast and almost worse lunch our first full day. The first day we arrived three hours earlier than check-in and had to pay $30 each for a deplorable buffet lunch. We weren't made aware of the specialty restaurants serving seafood in one and Italian food in another, nor that we needed to sign up for a table. They both were sold out and our only other choice was the deplorable buffet. We ordered eggs over medium and hash browns and bacon for breakfast at the "premium" restaurant this morning and the eggs were so rubbery, I couldn't cut the white of the egg with a fork. The eggs we were served initially were cooked in an oven instead of a skillet. We asked for fresh eggs and they complied. We know what to ask for next time. The bacon was way undercooked and the hash browns were way over cooked. They only serve margarine instead of butter, which tells me that they are cheap, even with high-paying premium customers. Fot lunch I ordered a chuck steak with mashed potatoes for lunch and specified medium well, I got the steak and it was nearly impossible to cut with a steak knife. I discovered that it was simply seared and not cooked. I asked that it would be cooked longer. They brought it out and it looked like nothing was done. I told them to take it away and bring me a quarter pounder with cheese, Well done! It was cooked right. We were warned about watered down drinks and tasteless food from other Google reviews, but we had to find out for ourselves. It was true! My wife ordered a piña colada three separate times and they all were poorly made. Negligible alcohol. At least the water they served was filtered. I gave high marks for the location as we did get a broad view of the Pacific Ocean but few people were swimming in it. The sight of several container ships staged around off shore didn't exactly benefit the views. The place is definitely "dated" as other reviews brought out. Peeling paint, signs of termite damage and broken pavement bricks. We had to request a replacement for the hair dryer twice because the first two didn't work. The thermostat showed 23 or 24 Celsius when we set it to 16. Even though it was somewhat cooler than outdoors, a better blowing fan would have helped a lot! I had a good night's rest on the bed and the shower was big enough for my wife and I to bathe together. I appreciated the safety bars beside the toilet as well as in the shower. The restaurant areas had issues with birds flying in and around the patrons. Iguanas were frequent also. The main redeeming quality of our whole stay was the friendly employees who served in various roles, from security to servers. Although we only tipped one time, I would have one tip for all the good people who are employed at this resort: find a better position somewhere else. You deserve more! Oh, and by the way, if you buy a piece of clothing at the gift shop, try it on before you leave the store. My wife didn't try something on and didn't know there's no return for credit or refund once you leave the store, even though you are a "premium" guest. Men, guard your eyes when you come. There's lots of eye-candy at this resort and you don't want your significant other to catch you looking at it. To add insult to injury, the only parking spot available for me was underneath a large tree where my van was subjected to constant bombardment of bird poo and the resort had no facilities for washing it off. The immediate business district outside the resort was so poor and filthy, I didn't want to risk having my car scratched. I won't come back Last, but by no means least, without a working knowledge of Spanish, English-only guests are going to be more frustrated than I. Fortunately I have a Tica wife, a Costa Rica native. Otherwise, I would be very helpless!

PROS / CONS REVIEW: Group of friends and I vacationed here in March for a week as an all-inclusive. We were aware that this was a family resort but not aware that this was a SPANISH speaking resort. List of our review below! PROS: - Staff is super friendly - even though there is a language barrier for some, they were all willing to try and help. The front desk staff was knowledgeable but I will say some know more information than others so it really depends on who you get - might be worth to go back and get a second opinion if necessary! - The staff they have for excursions IN the hotel are also very helpful and friendly and able to get deals sometimes. They also help with transportation if you don't want to travel by yourself. There are other folks who walk along the beach (in orange shirts) who sell cheaper excursions. - No issues with food as other people had - the buffet is pretty standard and has a lot of 'basic' options (like rice, beans, bread, pasta) so if you have a sensitive stomach you should be okay. Also there is no spice, so it's easy on your stomach! - The restaurants (there are 3) are also good, super salty food but overall, we had no issues and enjoyed the food! Good variety for 2 of the 3 restaurants. - Rooms & bathrooms are super well maintained - especially the bathrooms near the pool area, they are on top of the cleaning! - We did not hear any construction / reno noises when we were there - in the bedrooms or pool/beach. If anything, just standard lawn/ground maintenance noises. - There is a 18+ pool which is much quieter. CONS: - Spanish only - you will need to create your own fun if you do not know any Spanish - it is hard to get involved in the pool games/activities and night entertainment - not exaggerating when I say it's all in Spanish - so either brush up or do your own thing! - IT GETS EXTREMELY BUSY ON WEEKENDS. The resort opens up to the public/locals on weekends with day passes so pools & chairs get busy very quickly. - Pool chairs do get taken quickly regardless, pool opens at 8am & people leave towels and personal items on them as early as that so be sure to snag ones earlier rather than later. - You can only book 4 restaurants reservations if you stay for 7 days - we were told to book all them Sunday at noon at the front desk pending when they are open. Snack bar / buffet are the only other dinner options. - The room we had only had 2 double beds, but there were 3 of us so it made it a little squishy for sharing. Not sure if they had other options for queens. - Renovated rooms were clean and nice, the downside were the bed sizes even given the huge room we had. They also did not have any dressers so didn't make unpacking easy. Bring extra hangers. - Restaurants: Macondo only has 3 menu options & is the only indoor restaurant with AC - but was tasty! - Hallways in the room area are echoey, bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper - doors slams as well and happens often. - It is a FAMILY resort so be prepared for screaming / crying children! - The beach was not very swimming friendly - sand wasn't the nicest and it gets SUPER hot so make sure you wear shoes! Overall, the resort was a good break from reality (lol!) but don't think we will return.

Hey people, copying and pasting here to share with the broader travel community. I was very wrong about this place and seem to have made a very poor choice in Costa Rica. I checked in tonight with my wife and kids and booked two rooms in the non-premium area as that is where most of my readers would stay. They gave us two rooms. My room with my son was fine. Cool temperature, large bathroom, outside sitting area, etc. We were pleasantly surprised. But that did not last long. We got to my wife's room and it was tiny, damp, humid, and reeking of mold with the AC obviously not working well. Tiny bathroom, no outdoor space, mold, corroded safe, etc. Obviously I immediately gave my wife and daughter the first room and my six year old son and I decided we would suck it up and accept being miserable for the week in the second room. After getting 'settled' in our misery, we decided to try the MAIN Calypso buffet dinner after an almost 3 hour drive from San Jose through windy and dangerous roads. That is not resort related, but more of an 'avoid' driving if possible thing. As for the buffet, I am not sure how they can call what was being served 'food'. No one enjoyed anything but the pasta and cheap desert. When I went to try the one thing that looked decent, the server rudely walked away (in photo) and told me they were out of food which I could see in front of me. I walked away only to see two minutes later, he was back serving the same food at the same place. I asked his name and he refused to give it. When I told him his photo would be fine, he suddenly became apologetic. A bit too late after being treated like a second (or third) rate human. Tomorrow we are planning to check out what the rest of the resort has to offer, but honestly not optimistic at all and just hope the stink and humidity in our room go away soon so we can actually sleep. As it is now, I am worried my son and I are sleeping in mold and the stink permiates everything. May have to burn all my clothes and belongings I brougt here afterwards. My rating for now is a one star and would recommend avoiding and am not looking forward to the continued frustrations from my family. Should have stayed home. On a positive note, outside of the rude food server, the staff has been great and helped salvage a star. Update after night one: slept for a coupke of hours at most. The AC unit only shows it geta down to 25 degress but has to be set at 23. The fan would not stop blowing all night and ended up sleeping in my travel clothes to block the wind. Seems fan only has speed on high. Update 2 - increasing to 3 stars after staff address the issue and moved us to a different room. This room has one king bed rather than two doubles, but my son is small so it works fine. The AC in this room works and the room is not humid and does not smell like the previous one. We are looking forward to the rest of the stay now that we will be able to get a good sleep. It is still unfortunate the previous room was not great, but we are happy with the resolution.

Past reviews might reflect when this used to be a Hilton. It certainly isn't anymore -its just run-down. Don't ever compare this place to quality top-level "all-inclusives" if you have been to others. You'll know what we mean as soon as you step into the foyer. Also you'd better have some fluency in Spanish, since few associates can communicate in English. We were here just before Covid. We paid the "premium" all-inclusive, but still didn't get the ocean-view we booked on-line. The "Ocean view" premium building is the "U" shaped building on the far left if you view in Google satellite view. Just a partial view from the balcony at the far internal end of the U, is still considered ocean view in premium price. Next, the balcony walls are too high and all-brick. You can't really sit down and enjoy any view. We decided to just go with it instead of arguing during the late evening check-in after a long tiring trip from Arenal. The rooms in the premium building are best 2 stars back in the US. Pretty basic and functional - like a good motel room, except with 10' high ceilings (see pix online). The kids wanted to enjoy the game/teen room, but it only opens a few hours everyday. Once we did get in, it was a laugh. The room has a "dance floor" in a corner and the music is unbelievably LOUD throughout the play room (huge speakers blaring away) - no matter there is no one there! If management is reading this - please realize that there is something called "sound pollution" and just because the room-admin/coordinator who is sitting there can tolerate it does not mean that we have to SUFFER (even the admin didn't stick around one day and simply left us to our own devices). We are in the resort to RELAX. Tone the volume it down to 10% of what it is now and people can still dance in that area - and if no one is there, why is the music playing at headbanger levels? Just Ugh ridiculous. Next about the game room - they run HTPC/Windows Game machines with Xbox and other other PC games. This is another joke. We could get to the start menu and other options on the screen and found expired versions of McAfee and maybe one or two anti-virus running. Looking at task manager, we could tell that the machines were infected (I'm a IT security guy). For anyone reading this, please under no circumstances login to any of your own (or kids) xbox or other game or internet accounts. Your creds will be stolen instantly. Play the onscreen games as much as you can without performing any login, and leave. The second night there was a group of kids hogging the air hockey and table tennis who were very belligerent - even at the adults! - and unafraid to bully. The room admin/coordinator cannot be bothered for anything and didn't speak English anyways. YMMY -we'd suggest you hang around with your kids if you see anything untoward. Then we tried to check out the "evening entertainment" (on certain days). These are "only in Spanish" affairs and NOT FOR KIDS. So we had to leave. Next the food. Yes there are always lines and you should get in early before they close. Best we can say about the food is that is was OK. Tons of fried stuff, carbs and sugar if you are into that. They also lay out a small afternoon break, which is coffee, cookies and such. Any silver lining? It has a private beach area outside the premium building. Of course anyone from elsewhere can keep walking into this area, but the premium-only restriction was largely followed and the beach was sparse - perhaps they do police it occasionally and ask others to leave. The premium building also hast its own (OK) pools which are actually policed and access is verified. Else the rest of the facilities are jam-packed (at least before Covid) and mostly with natives. In conclusion, this is definitely a cool place for the natives (or Spanish speakers) who enjoy a day there. If you are not a native and OK with the low standards since Hilton left + paying a premium price on top, then go for it. Sorry but we come here spoiled by the Moon Palace and others that are a far better quality...

This visit, we learned all inclusive = rip you off as much as possible. The nicest thing about this hotel BY FAR was the lobby. Won't be doing the resort thing again, I'd much prefer to pay for actually good food, drinks, room, etc. Thank goodness for my wonderful, good spirited wife, or this could have been an atrocious time.

We arrive to check in in a nice lobby, there are about 6 people working behind the front desk, and at least 6 more wandering around supposedly helping, but it takes about 20 minutes before we are shepherded into a very ugly conference hall instead. Again, tons of people working but the line takes another 20 minutes or so.

We arrive in our room, it is as stated in the other reviews, very 80s-90s. It's pretty dark, smells like either a rat died or someone shoved a wet towel in the vents, and the AC is extremely loud. It is fortunately relatively clean and the beds are comfy. There's no room service.

We go downstairs to a "foam party" which is a VERY crowded pool with kind of a medium amount of bubbles in it, and a guy screaming into a microphone. Basically all the events were along the lines of "guy yelling in mic", so we steered clear of the main pool.

We got cocktails, we had SIX drinks each and did not feel even somewhat buzzed. I imagine each maybe had 1/4 of a shot in it, or maybe the alcohol bottles were filled with water. We got snacks at the pub and had a burrito filled with french fries, with a side of french fries. No seasoning and very minimal salt -- remember what I said about ripping you off maximally? Apparently that extends to salt on the food?

We walked to the beach - it was a pretty view but the water was way too dirty to swim in, if not obvious by its murkiness, then emphasized by the oil tankers in the distance. The dock was closed and clearly falling apart.

Dinner was one of the most mediocre buffets I've ever been to. Again, most of the food was not seasoned, not well cooked, and a poor imitation of food you can get way cheaper and way tastier anywhere else in the country (for example, we had caldosas the day before, and the ones in the buffet tasted like they had watered down the lime and used old fish in comparison to the ones we got for about 1000c at a stand in san jose) There was a wide variety of food to choose from but it was basically all terrible. The coffee was extremely watery, but also tasted burnt and old.

There are SO many people working there, and I felt so bad for them, almost all of them looked very sad. Again, I would rather have less employees to help me but have them be treated more respectfully by management.

We briefly swam in one of the pools and it was fine, kind of cold and super chlorinated.

At night, fortunately the drinks were poured a little stronger, there's a fancy bar, but it seats about 20 people and they refuse to serve you unless you find a chair. It was only open from maybe 6 to 10 or so, so we couldnt get a seat. At the less fancy bar, one of the worst sounding sound systems I've encountered was absolutely blasting cheesy old pop hits, again, with a guy screaming into the microphone periodically. We basically ran in, got drinks, and then ran 100+ meters away to get out of the range of the sound system. Every now and then 5 or so people would get up to dance, but I wouldn't really call it a party by any stretch.

Breakfast was also buffet style, again the coffee was TERRIBLE and surprisingly difficult to acquire (there was a counter with no one behind it and we stood there confused for a few minutes before someone showed up to pour us a watery coffee) and the food was so mediocre we wished we had just left first thing in the morning and gone elsewhere.

Sorry y'all, your money is definitely better spent elsewhere. We could have paid much much less for a much...
