Rooms got a 3 due to their lack of airflow and basic presentation. Service was a 5 because William was very present and helpful in all ways. Location a 5 because of ... location of course.
There are a few homes on the Casa Sonrisa property. We stayed at Casa Bambu and we stayed in May – a family of 6.
We stayed for 3 nights and arrived in the day time. The roads in this area are all dirt and being that we were not familiar with the layout, we actually found the property with only one turn around. This was due to all the information that was sent to us prior to our arrival. So a big thank you to Elena. A night time arrival would have been not as successful. There are many small properties and backroads in and around Casa Sonrisa which is confusing to a first time visitor.
Our first impression was that the property was well kept. Casa Bamboo is the house furthest from the beach but has a view of the ocean. It is in the middle of the jungle and our greatest surprise was in the morning about 4:30 am when the Howler Monkeys start in on their howling. It was super eerie as we were not prepared for it. We now refer to it as “monkey 0’clock”. There are loads of animals. Upon arrival in the front yard of Casa Bamboo there were 3 animals all together: an Agouti, a Turkey Buzzard and a Tayra carrying her baby in her mouth.
Later, we went for a walk with William who manages the property and who grew up in the Corcovado jungle. Just along the road to a beach up the road, we saw 3 types of monkeys: Spider Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys and Cappuccino Monkeys. And in the evening, the yard around the Casa was glowing with lightening bugs.
Casa Bambu is a 2-story home. Our nephew and his family stayed downstairs. They said it was comfortable but hot and that their children enjoyed the little mouse that visited them in the shower. It was probably the same little guy who left teeth marks in our avocado upstairs in the kitchen. Elena warned us about critters and monkey’s coming in through the windows at night and so we closed the windows with the bamboo rigged “screens” and placed all our food in the large refrigerator or into the containers that Casa provides. But we left out some fruit. And hence … a mouse meal. We knew what we were getting into because of what Elena explained and we wanted a jungle experience with lots of wildlife.
The outside deck off the kitchen was lovely and the living spaces were all functional. The only uncomfortable aspect was that the small fans need to be larger. Sleeping was difficult because of lack of airflow.
We chose Casa Sonrisa because we wanted to try surfing and there is an amazing beginner’s surf break at low tide at the beach in front of the Casa Sonrisa property. We knew that the Casas on this property are not 5 star but we wanted a rustic, local-feel and it was just perfect for what we were looking for.
And there is a lot of information provided. If you like information then this will comfort you.
Thank you for the superb communication and information and having us as your guests.

Read moreThis was our 2nd trip to the Casa Bambu resort- we’d previously stayed at Casa Sonrisa in 2014 with our 2 sons and this time stayed at Casa Pina for 10 nights. |We were delighted to find that very little had changed in terms of the area/wildlife and beaches - no doubt the unpaved road to the property from Puerto Jimenez is a major factor for that. |The property is completely off grid - although there is wifi - which does take some adjustment even though we knew what to expect. Once you relax into the simplicity of an off grid lifestyle it’s an oasis of calm and you feel completely removed from the stresses of everyday life. |We went kayak fishing with William the manager - despite our lack of Spanish and his little English there were no problems with communication - he was charming and extremely patient even when I managed to tangle 3 lines at once and capsize! We caught lots of fish and cooked them for our supper.|Elena was extremely responsive to any email/WhatsApp queries and booked our horse riding/zip lining and Golfo Dulce tours for us - all of which were really enjoyable. The riding with Carlos and his children was a real highlight.|We walked to Martinas or to Encanta La Vida for drinks and supper when we didn’t cook at Casa Pina - which has a really well equipped kitchen.|Most days we had the beach at Pan Dulce to ourselves- the long right hand wave from the point is sublime and kept my husband fully occupied!|The wildlife is amazing - we saw an armadillo lots of coatis/tayra/agouti/lizards/all 4 species of monkeys (howler/spider/white face/squirrel) just in the garden of Casa Pina. There were macaws, vultures and hawks at the beach and we saw yellow throated toucan up in the forest whilst zip lining.|It’s really notable how well informed and educated all of the tour operators are in respect of the flora and fauna in the area.|We hired a 4 wheel drive pick up with good ground clearance to drive down from Quepos - for most purposes we did not need 4WD but to access the zip lining trip when wet we were...
