Our Stay at House Mara was amazing!

The Lady of the house was very kind and welcoming. We had 3 out of the 4 available rooms and had come to see the Plitvice Lakes National Park. As the forecast was rainy for the day after we arrived and we had booked tickets to the park for that day we inquired if she knew of a possibility to rebook. She was very helpful and gave me the number and we were able to make the changes to our booking just in time.

We had some lovely chats and were given some amazing homemade Williams Birne Schnapps made by a friend of her fathers, and on later days also Plum Schnapps made by her father and a Walnut Liqueur after a family recipe from her mother’s side. In return I prepared a Williams Birne Sour cocktail with the homemade Schnapps and we had a lovely time enjoying all these things together.

We also got great recommendations for dinner and were provided with a load of activities to do in the area.

The breakfast was also very nice and elaborate for such a small accomodation. On top of that we were given the option of when we wanted breakfast served. On Sunday when we went to the Plitvice Lakes we even had coffee ready and waiting for us at 7am.

I cannot find enough superlatives to express how much I enjoyed my stay. Firstly, the host is such a lovely lady, she is so interesting to talk to, makes you feel so welcome and cannot do enough to make you feel at home. She even drove me to the bus stop so I didn't have to walk. The rest of her family are also very nice, it is a lovely environment to stay in.

Secondly, it is a beautiful location. The views of the mountains are stunning, it is so nice to be able to sit on your balcony and enjoy the scenery. Not only is this a great location for exploring Plitviče (there is a regular bus or a 15 minute drive), but there are also so many great walks you can do in the surrounding area, and the host is happy to recommend different ones to you.

Thirdly, it is so comfortable, quiet and homely. I had a wonderful stay here, and learnt so much about Croatia from my host, making my whole stay in the country so much richer because of it. I highly recommend House Mara, you will have a...

This is a hidden gem of a stay for pre or post a Plitvice Lakes visit. We stayed at House Mara for one night after walking around Plitvice Lakes all day. Less than a 15min drive from Plitvice (easy, straight route) and easy to find, with many surrounding restaurants.||After a long hot day it was lovely to be greeted by the very polite and welcoming owner. She recognised us as “The Brits” (read into that what you like hah) and recommended restaurants for our stay. Her beautiful children and cute kitten live downstairs at House Mara, adding to a very homely vibe.||Rooms are standard but have everything you need including en-suite with a good shower, air con, WiFi and a TV. We opted for the €5 breakfast... this is a steal!
