Most travelers visit this area on one or more day trips from Copenhagen using the train. However, my wife and I had a rental car and were coming from Sweden by ferry, and were looking for a convenient and comfortable place to stay a couple of nights so that we could explore the region and its attractions using our car. Fredensborg and the Store Kro (“Grand Inn”) were perfect and we highly recommend both if you are traveling the same we did.||||We stayed at the Store Kro for two nights in late August, ‘19. It has a great location very near the beautiful Fredensborg Palace and its extensive manicured grounds that have public walking paths and views of the nearby lake. Fredensborg is just a few miles from Louisiana Art Center, and only a short drive from Kronborg and Frederiksborg Castles. When the royal family is not staying at the palace, the picturesque little town can be very quiet, but it also hosts summer events like the marathon that took place while we were there.||||The Store Kro is visually very appealing both inside and outside. It dates from 1724 but has been recently renovated and updated. It has a cozy and welcoming lobby and adjacent bar, with a restaurant off the one side that seems also to be used for receptions and events to the other. The breakfast buffet, which was excellent, is served in a light and air bistro that connects with the bar and that opens onto a pleasant terrace and the hotel grounds beyond. Free parking is available in front of the hotel and also in a lot across the street.||||Our room (#25, a “Grand Double Main”) was huge, with dormer windows in the bedroom area and in the bathroom. It was on the third floor, reached by an elevator which was fine for hauling luggage but was so slow that it was often more convenient to walk down to the lobby. The room was attractive and comfortable, with a king bed, two night stands, a desk, and an upholstered chair with a small side table. There was a large built-in closet with shelving and hanging space. Wifi was strong and fast. The bathroom was very large with a stylish one-piece vanity and sink with plenty of room for toiletries. The shower was very nice although it drained very slowly.||||All in all, the Store Kro was one of the most pleasant hotels we stayed in during our three-weeks in Scandinavia, and certainly seemed to be a very good value. We strongly recommend it if you have a car and want to spend a few days exploring this lovely...
Read moreWe stayed 5 nights in one of the 4 deluxe suites in the renovated building. The A frame slant to the roof over the bed and work area made for many a head bump. ||Amenities normally associated with a 4 star hotel that were missing:||1. No safe||2. No kettle to heat water||3. No coffee, tea, sugar, creamer, spoons , wooden sticks to stir the coffee||4. No refrigerator||5. No shelf in the shower to place anything. Whatever you bring personally goes on the floor of the shower. ||6.No ice bucket||7. Housekeeping never dusted the furniture nor cleaned the bathroom floor. They were great at making the bed and providing towels||8. No washcloth. Most European hotels do not provide one. The intl chains do so||9. Limited space to store clothes and bags||10. No plug in the sink for one to wash delicate items||11 No fitness center||||On the positive side:||I asked for and eventually received a a kettle and two cups with 4 tea bags and 4 sugars. We went to the store and purchased coffee and creamer for 5 days.||The food was excellent but very pricey||There was a double sink in bathroom ||I went down to the Bistro and requested one of the few ice buckets for the duration of the stay and received one which we were able to fill every night at the Bistro.||Jesper at the front desk was a pleasure to deal with and very supportive in helping us get a van to the CPH airport. He was also informative about events in the area.||The front desk staff and wait staff were very nice.||Walking distance to the few shops, grocery store and restaurants in the tiny shopping area.||||Value for the the USD: Not much as everything was very expensive even with the present strength of US dollar||||Location Great if you have a car or want to take a bus to another town to find a restaurant. Also great if you want to see the Queens summer residence and gardens as they are a very short walk form the hotel||||This is not a true 4 star hotel by any standard I know of and we travel all over Europe||||Summary: I am certain we...
Read moreMy Mum and I were looking forward to staying at this hotel, in one of the most attractive parts of Denmark. We know the area and have previously used the Store Kro for family occasions.|On arrival after a very long journey, there was no one on reception to receive us - keys just left on the desk.|Our rooms were in the rear of the building - tiny and claustrophobic. No mirror in the room, no phone and in my case, no TV remote. Shower and bin in my room broken,The servicing of the rooms was not great. Worn carpets. There are windows that open onto the street outside, but rooms are still airless, hot and stuffy. Keeping the window open overnight in an effort to cool down means being woken early by delivery lorries just outside.|It's a good idea to get up early in order to get a clean table at breakfast. Not enough (or any) staff in the restaurant and tables were not cleared after guests had left. The buffet breakfast limited - no fresh fruit, no bread rolls, little replenishment and apparently you can't have bacon after 9:00 a.m. The same French pop music was played every day. The last day, the floor was still covered with food from the night before.|The night we arrived we ate in the bistro with its uncomfortable chairs - a choice of two main dishes. Service was not helpful, and again we had to re-lay the table to sit where we wanted, as the waitress was busy.|Overall impression was that the guests are an inconvenience. "Poor" rather than "terrible" from me because...
