Puerto Plata Villiage, like any resort, will have many pros and cons. We stayed at this resort for one week and can offer our personal overview. Overall, we rate our experience a 1 out of 5.
Cleanliness on the resort is exceptional. Maid service is excellent and grounds keeping is well maintained. Problem is the hotel is aging and only some rooms are "upgraded". Hot water (or even warm water) is scarce. Rooms are subject to insects because of bad weatherstripping. Ceilings in eating areas are flaking. This resort needs help.
Staff are very friendly but their English speaking is virtually non existent. We've been in the Playa Dorada Complex (at different hotels) for many years and can honestly say how poor the communication ability has become. This particular resort apparently caters also to a large degree to local Dominicans seeking vacation. Whilst this in itself should not ever be of any relevance, the problem is that the staff cater almost entirely to their own citizens and all but ignore the international travellers which are in the dramatic minority here. It's a very isolating experience.
Entertainment is ridiculously poor, from an international perspective. Poolside entertainment is completely in the local Spanish language, with disturbingly loud Dominican rap music playing most of the time. Locals seem to love it; didn't see one international guest feeling so enthusiastic about it. There's no escaping the high decibel assault anywhere near the pool.
The resort claims to have have 3 swimming pools but there's only 1 adult pool and 1 kiddy pool. So we count 2, sort of.
Food is good, but highly repetitive. Deserts are delightful though.
The local shopping mall is now 50% vacant and many gift shops boarded up. No casinos are left in the Playa Dorada if that's your thing.
Generally speaking this is a clean resort but is dated, and incredibly boring if you're looking for any sort of nightlife or even international traveller interaction (because attendance is mostly Dominicans that won't even acknowledge you). We made the best of what we had but what an overall disappointment. Simply put...... never in a million years would we...
Read moreThis place, in so many words is described as a "hell hole."
The bedroom and bathroom was filled with mosquitoes, the room and entire hotel had structural issues... just trust me. Also the bedroom had bugs in one bed and stains all over the other. When asking for the bedding to be changed, they kept saying they would do it immediately, yet it took almost an hour to do so with 4 visits to the front desk due to the phone in the room didn't work. And the bathroom... we didn't even shower due to how awful it looked.
All the "luxuries" that they offered looked horrendous (i.e. Jacuzzi was atrocious and dirty, I wish I can show a picture that I displayed to the staff member while we checked out less than 24 hours later... tennis court was appalling... etc) The resort "amenities" such as the supermarket and everything they list on the brochure was a joke. The buffet (again as others listed) not appetizing and even when you arrive as soon as they open, the food would be luke warm. How Sway!? The wifi was ONLY in the lobby and was intermittent. Staff members blamed other staff members for the terrible service. When we complained about the service no one cared until we checked out less than 24 hours later.
The only positive about this place was the view of the beach...the beach itself was dirty and made you itch, but the view was stunning of the scenery! Says a lot about the jail, I mean facility. In short...AVOID... don't waste your money. And if I didn't say it enough, I will reiterate this one statement... we checked in at about 4pm and left the following day at 1pm panicking to find a...
Read moreOne of the worst hotel/resort I've ever been to. BEWARE....this is a substandard resort and there are hostels in Europe in better condition than this place. We booked an inclusive package through a third party just to find out this place is sub par at all levels. Spider webs, wall stains, unmaintained bathrooms, non flushing toilets, non functioning air conditioning...you name it. If you are in the process of booking and considering other options, trust me and book some of the other resorts nearby like Emotions, Atmosphere or Casa Colonial(Playa Dorada area). They are pricier but worth the money. The only good thing about this resort is the authentic dominican feel(majority of guests are local and speak spanish).Otherwise, they even suck at professionalism and dont even bother about making a good impression for their hotel guests. If you want something which is remotely close to a 3+ star hotel in North America or Europe, just close your eyes and find another resort.
