My wife and I stayed here for 6 days and 5 nights. We booked a private room with double-bed, private shower, private toilet, and fan. The room was basic, but comfortable. Our room was on the second floor for two nights, and then Javier (the host and owner) moved us to the third floor which is a lot cooler since it catches the breeze off the Pacific.||||It is a great place to stay in Canoa for the price and the hostel is powered by solar panels. Breakfast is provided (depending on the type of room you book) for free, and the wifi has a strong signal, as well as being fast. The hostel is only two blocks from the beach (about a 5 minute walk) and its location within the village means there is not a lot of noise compared to other streets closer to the beach or main street. Outside of your room, there are a lot of places to sit or lounge around with outlets for any electronics. There is a roof-top terrace as well for sun bathers.||||Javier is a great host and was always willing to help us with anything we needed. He has a lot of connections with many people in the city so if you want to take surf lessons or do some exploring beyond Canoa's beach, Javier can help...
Read moreFor those that don't know, Canoa is an incredibly small, impoverished town. There are very few options for lodging. My friends and I couldn't find anything with nicer facilities that was available when we went in August 2017. ||With that caveat, Hostel Rutamar is probably one of the five nicest places to stay in Canoa. The rooms are clean, the hostel is very unique and interestingly built, the owner is nice and usually available on site, it's safe, there's parking, towels are provided, it's two blocks from the beach, and there was free filtered water. On the con side, the rooms are damp and smell like mildew and there are no screens on the windows (but fans provided). It's definitely got a basic hostel feel. It's a great place to stay if you're looking for the basics and want a...
Read moreI had a super week in Hostal Rutamar, working with Javier, the owner and manager, on his electrical installation, in exchange for housing (volontary worker).||||Hostal Rutamar is a fantastic wooden 3 level hostel, hand made by Javier, and solar panels powered. It is mostly quiet, because not on the beach front, even though you don't get the view you could have there.||||Javier is super friendly, easygoing, and speaks 3 languages!!||||Rooms are very clean, with private bathroom (even with hot shower!), and the garden / terrace is a fantastic place to hang out in the hamacs or a the wooden tables.||Everything is hand made out of wood in this hostel, including all the furniture in the rooms.||||Long live Hostal Rutamar!||(ps : no internet at the moment, consequence of last April's...
