My partner and I wanted to spend a nice weekend away to relax and I remembered there was a hotel/spa in Cotacachi. We booked last minute and spent two nights.||We booked a matrimonial room with a queen bed, but it was not a queen. Pretty sure it was a full because our bed at home is a full and half and these two nights we were fitting pretty tight! ||Don't get me wrong it was a beautiful room, but I was a bit disappointed by not having the bigger bed. The room had a large bathroom and shower and a fireplace, the welcome was beautiful and they left a special note and fruits with chocolate.||We also arrived early and I still had to work, so they let us have the lounge all to ourselves and we ordered breakfast and they brought us a huge platter of cheeses, hams, salami, fruit, coffee, milk, juice and took our order for eggs.||It's a beautiful place, beautifully decorated, and garden hotel is an understatement because it feels like you're walking in the move Secret Garden on the grounds.||Here are the only things that irked me a little in terms of service and quality:||- we went to enjoy the pool in the afternoon around 5, pool is open till 6. And they had just poured chlorine tablets into the pool and we couldn't go in. At least wait till pool hours are closed!||- the queen bed issue. Definitely was not a queen. When I asked reception they said it was and wasn't sure how to respond. I asked for another room but they said nothing was available. I think that was unlikely. They did have one group there, but the hotel wasn't full. ||- the group there was kosher, so for breakfast they occupied the entire weekend the beautiful breakfast terrace that overlooks the grounds and peacocks that roam around. ||We were told that sunday morning we'd be able to have breakfast there instead of inside the dining hall, which was still very cozy and pretty, but not the same. Sunday morning we made our way to the breakfast terrace and the kosher group was still there and the lady who was leading their group basically kicked us out telling us we weren't supposed to be there. I was really disappointed. I'd been there before years ago but it was the first time for my partner. ||- More firewood! The climate is nice in Cotacachi but the rooms were very cold. The amount of firewood was not enough. And if you know guests are coming, make sure there is firewood and even help get the fire going during check...

Read moreLuxurious hotel for an indulgent splurge. The grounds are a virtual botanical garden, with all manner of birds to be seen partaking of the nectar from the many species of flowering trees and shrubs. |Guest bungalows are beautifully furnished and quite large, with separate sitting areas, glittering chandeliers and a fireplace to ward off any night chills. Ours (#112) was occupied by the Queen of Spain during her visit to Ecuador in the 1990's. Bed warmers are also set in place during the nightly turndown service.| There also a beautiful spa, with a lovely indoor pool and serene massage and treatment rooms. |The delicious included breakfast is served in a glassed in setting that allows you to watch peacocks strut around the lawns outside and if you'd like to feed them the staff has bags of breadcrumbs ready for you to toss. The hotel also operates the most elegant restaurant in the area, if not the country and while the prices are above average for fine dining in Ecuador, the food and service more than justify the cost. That said we are not talking serious money by US standards. The most expensive main course, Duck La'Orange, being around $30, at lunch. Bottom line, after braving 13,000 feet to explore northern Ecuador, go ahead and treat yourself to this very...
