The hostel organizes tours to rainforest. Unfortunately the organisation was totally unprofessional. We were supposed to go to rainforest with Tony as he told ( we think that he is the owner of this average hostel ) and make rappelling from cascades. But he changed the plan and the itinerary without letting us know. Next day he sent us to the forest with a young and unexperienced guide (18 years old with no language except spanish) and Tony told us that after tour we can return to the hostel by bus ! he charges 55 usd for tour which is ridiculously overpriced what he offers. Unexpected guide took us in to the jungle (off the trail because Tony said to him to not makes rappel in cascades with us) and we have been attacked by 100+ wild bees where we got stung 30+ in the jungle ! He had no knowledge about first aid and knowledge about the complications. Ofcourse this was an accident and it can happen but after Tony said "its a jungle it is dangerous" in this case guides or tour operator should be bit more professional. No english speaking guide is nonsense incase of emergency No first aid kits carried inccluding anti allergy pills or injection or basic medical equipments incase of emergency "it is jungle it is dangerous" We are not living in Tarzan's standarts or lifestyle they must have modern precautions for this kind of dangerous outdoor activities Guides should trained better and follow modern and professional ways for outdoor activities. Plus Guide was super fast always 50 meters ahead of us we had to rush to follow him. And after all of that we complained to Tony about this and he got angry and he said to us we are making drama to not pay 110 dollars ( we had to go to 2 times to hospital in Tena and Quito because of complications still using cortizone...

Hostal Pakay is a gem in Tena, Ecuador! This eco-friendly hostel, run by a wonderful Ecuadorian/American couple, offers an unforgettable experience in the Amazon rainforest.

The owners go above and beyond to make your stay exceptional. Their commitment to sustainability is impressive, with the hostel constructed using recycled materials and featuring innovative dry compost toilets that conserve water and provide natural fertilizers for their lush garden.

The breakfast is absolutely marvellous! We were treated to a delicious spread of fresh fruit, a refreshing fruit smoothie, perfectly scrambled eggs, and hot pastries straight from the bakery. The coffee and tea selection was good as well.

The hostel’s location is perfect - just a 15-minute walk (downhill) from town, offering a peaceful retreat in a beautiful jungle garden setting. The rooms are comfortable, and the overall atmosphere is serene yet full of life, with the sounds of birds and insects creating a true rainforest ambiance.

Hostal Pakay also offers exciting tours of the Amazon, led by Tony, one of the owners and a licensed guide. These tours provide an authentic jungle experience while promoting environmental awareness.

If you’re looking for a good value, eco-conscious, welcoming, and unforgettable stay in the upper Ecuadorian Amazon, Hostal Pakay is the...

We stayed there for 3 nights and arrived later than planned. After a phone call they said it was no problem we can check in anytime we arrive. Gave us tips for taxis and how much to pay them max to the hotel. The accomodation was great, you can hear nature sounds from outside, but we liked it really and it was relaxing. There is a eco-toilet, which gets changed daily - so no minus-point for that, because you know it when you book it! The next day we did a jungle hiking tour with tony - it was great, he speaks spanish english and german, fluently! He knows everything about nature. The tours are great, can recommend the Napo River tour - something we will never forget! And the prices are fair once you experience what its coming with, dont worry about it - WOW! Breakfast was freshly made and they will make every of your wishes come true. 1000% recommend!!!

This was definitely a highlight of our trip to Ecuador! We stayed 3 nights and did 3 tours, 2 led by Tony, one of the owners of the hostel. We learned a lot about the local culture, nature, and history on the primary forest hike and cocoa farm tour (+ more). All the staff were super friendly and accommodating. On our last day, we wanted to take a half day rafting tour. Tony was willing to take just the 2 of us and some staff to make it happen; in the end, he arranged for us to go with another tour company (Kayak Ecuador) which was very professional and just as friendly. When we came back, we were able to shower and chill even though we had already checked out. Such a great and relaxing spot. Thanks to Erin and Tony for everything!
