We are staying right next door for the week and decided to try and surf a little while we are here. Keep in mind, we are beginner surfers, only surfed a couple of times on our travels and wanted to attempt a couple small waves. We decided to go to Pelicano’s to rent a board. The girl working there charged us 15 USD + 25 USD deposit for 24 hour rental, and gave us a beginner foam board with a leash. She didn’t give us any information about the conditions, and didn’t ask any questions. After only 30 minutes in the water, and only 3-4 small waves, the leash broke. We went back to the camp and a customer staying there let us know that the leash was too small for the board (wrong equipment) so it was bound to break. The girl told us we had to pay 15 USD for the leash, although she confessed she was the one who gave us the wrong size. When we were finally able to speak to the owner after 7 hours of waiting (while unable to use the board because she wouldn’t give us another leash), he said that it was our responsibility to know that the leash was wrong even if we were the customers renting a service, and that we should’ve asked the girl to put the right leash (we had no idea). After all this, they even tried to charge us for a dent on the board that was already there, but we had taken pictures of the board that morning to back us up so they couldn’t. We ended up losing our surf day (rental) waiting for him and had to pay for their mistake. We were surprised to see so many positive comments, maybe this was an unfortunate situation, but we were disappointed in...

What an incredible experience.

Location: Can’t be beaten. On the sand, quiet, no road noise, just the sounds of the ocean.

Accommodation: If you’re after air-con and a fancy hotel, head elsewhere. If you’ve ever wanted the experience of living in a beach shack on the sand, this is it. As authentic, local and epic as it gets. A truly memorable and wonderful experience.

Shared space: My wife and I both work online. The wifi was great and the location was unbeatable.

Food: Second-to-none: Roxy is an incredible chef. It’s like eating home-cooked meals. Wholesome, fresh, bountiful and delicious. We had the chicken plate six times and the shrimp cocktail is to die for.

People: The other guests were like-minded and respectable. Everyone chills out, reads, surfs, exercises, eats good food and hangs out with a few beers at night. Most people are in bed by 10 and have no loud music. Super cool chilled vibes.

Service: Second-to-none. Ulysys opens his home to you. He advised me on where to surf and when. He made me coffee at 4:30 am, drove me to the surf and showed me where to paddle out. He advised us on the best things to do in town and offered to take us to his new hostel in Punta Mango (which we plan on doing next time). He spends his whole day and night making sure everyone is having a good time and is comfortable. He is a true gentleman, a genuine person and an all-around legend of a guy. Roxy answered all our annoying questions and even did our laundry. She was equally brilliant.

We will be back and can’t...

I truly had the most wonderful stay at Pelicano Surf Camp, and I would not change a thing.

If you want to learn to surf or just surf local spots yourself, this is the perfect place for you. The classes they offer are absolutely excellent (Ulisses is an amazing instructor with so much passion), as well as the assortment of great boards available to rent, and advice on where to surf nearby!

Also, if you’re looking for somewhere to relax, this is such a beautiful and tranquil place. You’ll fall asleep listening to the waves every single day, and you can step onto the sand off of the door step during the day which is truly amazing. This place is located in the sweetest little town, with the kindest people.

The food cooked by Roxana and Kelly is absolutely delicious and so tasty, they are very talented chefs. Every meal available is freshly made, and you can tell! I would definitely recommend coming here for food, or eating here during your stay.

The family will make your stay so special, they are so welcoming, warm and lovely, I hope you enjoy your stay as much as I did, thank you so much...

I contacted Pelicano Surf Camp to make a booking with them for myself and two friends, which they confirmed. A few days later, we reached out to ask a question regarding the room, and they told us that they had double booked the room, and we could no longer stay for our whole booking, leaving us without accommodation for a night. Pelicano never contacted us to tell us of their mistake, we only found out because we contacted them. Then, a few days prior to our arrival, we messaged them to cancel our booking. They responded very rudely and unprofessionally saying, “We knew it. I never booked it for you😉🫡” (screenshot of conversation attached). Overall, unreliable, disorganized, horrible customer service, and extremely unprofessional.

Pelicano’s confirmed our booking and a week later when we enquired about air conditioning they then told us that they had double booked so we had one night with no accommodation. They never messaged us to tell us this, it was only when we contacted them that they informed us of this. Following this, we were apprehensive about our stay, especially when they asked for a full upfront payment prior to our arrival. When we decided to cancel a few days before our arrival, they responded with an extremely unprofessional message saying “We knew it, we never booked it for you” (see photo attached). Horrific customer service, not sure what it’s like when you stay there but from our experience beware.

They are exactly what they say they are. I would only describe it better as a home staying than a hostel. You’ll be around the (amazing) family all the time. All the photos are true. The internet is pretty good and steady — as a digital nomad it’s a important thing for me. The place is in the sea, and all the surfers where really amazed by it. They offer surf classes, local tours and shuttle from and to the airport. If you get a top bunk bed there is no stairs so ask a bottom one when you book it :)
