Gondar Plaza Hotel ጎንደር ፕላዛ ሆቴል — Hotel in Amhara Region

My bag was stolen from my hotel room. I had lost my key and called the hotel to ensure they rekeyed the door. I thought I was being paranoid but when I returned to the hotel my bag and ipad was missing. I assumed somebody found my key on the street and entered my room. This is possible as the hotel has ZERO security (no cameras or security staff - bad idea in Gondar).||||However, hotel investigation was poorly handled with several false statements, later retracted had left me in doubt as to who really took my bag. I still don't know what happened to my bag and hotel has poorly communicated with me about investigation and failed to follow up as to investigation status. In addition to zero security, hotel procedures weren't followed by the staff. I initially chalked up the theft to my mistakes and bad luck, but response from the hotel left me deeply suspicious of the true story. ||||I definitely should have used the safe, but would typically trust a hotel of this caliber to ensure safety and security. I was wrong. Lesson learned. Hotel is otherwise decent property but too far from main tourist attractions to be useful to...

*****WARNING I had my bag stolen at this hotel. I lost my key and called the hotel and asked the manager to rekey my door. Once I returned my bag was gone. Initially I suspected somebody found my key and entered the room (which would be unlikely but possible owing to poor hotel security) but multiple contradicting and suspicious statements of staff (communicated directly to me and by the owner) and failure of owner to complete the investigation or credibly explain suspicious staff comments lead me to suspect the staff. The owner communicated to me messages from the staff which were clearly false and the owner then backtracked when I called him out on the false statements. Owner never got back to me on the final investigation which has increased the validity of my concerns about the staff as well as whether the owner actually cares. Not safe to stay here. As hotel is well outside the main tourist area no reason...

Modern hotel which is slightly further away from the city sights. Staff are very helpful and friendly from the doorman to the cleaning staff. Most speak some English. There is no air conditioning but staff kindly gave us a fan for our room. Also be aware that there is no elevator and some rooms are on the 4th floor!

The room itself was spacious and clean. Good water pressure and hit water in the shower though the controls were a little fiddly. The flat screen TV has CNN and BBC channels.

There is a small grocery store next door for snacks, drinks and toiletries. Across the road is a traditional restaurant with traditional dancing.
