We stayed at the L Shape Hotel in Gondar in July of 2018, and after much reflection I'm still not sure whether or not I would recommend it. The biggest pro is the location, which is probably the best in town, with the castle less than 10 minutes on foot and many banks around the corner. Balancing out the convenient location is the actual room as the major con - the room wasn't the most waterproof in the rainy season so our floor was a little flooded (sort of like having a bed overlooking the lake, but the lake is muddy standing rain water) and the smell of mould coming from the bathroom left me concerned that there may be a body hidden within the walls. On the bright side, the room's TV circa 1970 added a whimsical charm and the balcony was quite nice for brushing your teeth when you can't bear the smell of the bathroom sink long enough to sustain a round of brushing. I also appreciated the ingenuity displayed by hotel staff in patching the holes in the mosquito net using bandaids, which suggests a clear commitment to a standard of care for their guests. The restaurant was also delicious and reasonably priced, which nearly made us forget the cigarette burns in our sheets and the pounding music that played during all hours of the night. If you're a no frills budget traveller, don't mind some grime, and are good at handling questionable odours, L Shape Hotel is the...
Read moreInitially we stayed at a Lodge for one night and were not satisfied for the price, we got a broken toilet and tv. We immediately left for L-Shape hotel and glad we did! We were on the second floor facing the street. ||Room was basic, yet clean with mosquitoe nets. Yes, the pillow cases and sheets are old, may have rips and tears but it is clean. Small balcony where we hung our laundry was helpful. There was ample hot water which was a treat. You can't beat this comfort for $15US a night. Also if you want to avoid the early chanting from the Church, best to pick a room that faces the street.||||Wifi was spotty. Worked on and off but best connection was in the hallway by the stairs.||||Resteraunt served good food as we always ordered the shiro and fried rice. They didn't have cheese so sad we couldn't try the pizza.||||Staff was also amazing and friendly with our 3 yr old. It felt like staying with friends. Only thing to be aware of is when you arrive, at the front of hotel are trekking touts who offer to carry your bags and are really friendly with you. They want to pressure you to book a tour with them. Buyer beware.||||L-Shape hotel is such a great budget alternative. Thanks guys....
Read moreThis hotel offers a really cheap price and is situated close to the city center (walk to castel 10-15min). We also got a contact for organizing a trekking trip to Semien Mountains. In the meantime they kept our luggage in a storing room. The rooms (single and also kingsize) were mainly clean. The bathroom was smelly and one time the toilet flush was not working. Hot water was either burningly hot or cold. We changed the room and the other one was better. ||Not every room had moscito nets, so better bring your own. ||Sometimes it was a bit noisy and you could hear strange noises from other rooms. ||Restaurant is okay. We preferred a cheap stay and use the money for sightseeing and nice dinner else where. Better do not take the cheese omelet for breakfast. ||All in all, for an extremely cheap price (230Birr single, 280Birr kingsize without breakfast) the hotel is good, we didn't regret...
