Stayed here on a business trip with colleagues - it was clear we had been given the best of the rooms; although we had no shower water at all in the evening when we arrived, the following morning we all had hot running water - others at adjoining breakfast tables had not been so lucky. Our rooms had clean sheets and pillows and the bathrooms had also been scrubbed - other fittings such as the broken mosquito net on the window were obviously beyond the housekeeping staff ability to rectify. The carpet was also filthy - living in Addis I know vacuum cleaners are not commonly found here, so I suspect the same to be true in Axum.||||The saving grace of this hotel is the view from the rough hewn terrace outside the restaurant, as well as the quiet ambience. A lovely place to watch the sun go down of an evening. ||||||By Ethiopian standards there are no surprises here but I could understand international tour groups would expect more (unless their guides...
Read moreWe visited Axum in October 2024, two years after the armistice, and this was one of the hotels which were not yet ready to receive foreigners. Even though we had announced our arrival, the rooms were not ready: Black water coming from the tubes which had not been used for years, the shower not working, lights in the room were partially not working, the wifi was not connected to the internet, it was not possible to lock the room doors etc.|We decided to go to the clean and friendly Almaz hotel instead (+251 900536730), which does not serve breakfast but has the excellent Kuda restaurant nearby. For no good reason Tripadvisor does not allow tourists like me to add a place like Almaz Hotel to the recommended accomodation section, even though all necessary information can be found on GoogleMaps and OpenStreetMaps. For this reason I added...
Read moreWe were advised to stay at the Yeha for its views over the city- indeed, they are located on a nice perch overlooking he Queen of Sheba’s baths and the stelae, but as other reviews have suggested, come for a drink but not to stay.||Our room was dark, carpeted and sadly did not have hot water and even water from the tap at certain points. The wifi did not work in the room and the bathroom was not clean. The food in the restaurant was unfortunately also disappointing, some of the drabbest and driest we have had in the entire country.||It’s a shame that the price of this hotel is misleading. Axum is such an interesting place and I would hate for visitors to pass it up on the belief that there are no adequate places to stay. We hear there are many newer, less expensive options. The Yeha was a regretful...
