Tankavaara Gold Village — Hotel in Northern Lapland

I had visited the place before, this year I spent 3 nights in a cabin of the Gold village (before and after a multiday hike in the area). The cabins are cozy and all gold digger style and just beautiful. Toilet, shower and kitchen are in a separate common building. Depending on which cabin you get, that building will be more or less close. Cabins have nice wooden bunk beds, bed linen, a table, chairs, a fireplace/chimney, chopped wood some shelves. ||Check-in is in the nearby restaurant, which is also a cozy place with good food and very friendly staff. ||There are several old buildings and some tiny shops in the Gold Village, you also have the possibility to learn gold panning. The international gold museum is also within walking distance.||There's just no supermarkt in the area (the closest grocery store is in Vuotso).||Free wifi works close to the reception/restaurant only, not in...

The place is lovely, in a reconstructed gold village with a gold museum, in the National park of Tankavaara. The rooms, apart from wooden cottages in the wood, are in two ugly buildings that indeed disagree with the general idea. My room was small and very basic, beds very uncomfortable, kind of soft sofas with a very thin mattress; the bathroom new and comfortable. Breakfast is quite poor. Lunch and dinner are average. The nicest one was the fire dinner in a small hut with Sami music and a very nice girl of the staff. The activities are well organized. I did snowshoeing in the park with the same nice girl and reindeer sledding by night (no aurora unluckily). The staff is kind and helpful. Wi-Fi works very well...

Our second time visiting and things seem to be more well run than they were 8 years ago. The gold museum is excellent. Very informative and interesting and very well put together. If, like us, you want to get your hands dirty it's possible to spend a day (or longer if you want to) on a real working claim digging yourself and you can keep what you find. All equipment is included and the owner took us to the claim and showed us how everything worked. We didnt strike it rich but we did find some gold as a memory of a very hard days work.
