Booked for 4 nights to bring together family and friends from New Zealand, Finland & Scotland. After driving down a small track, the driveway opens up to a large yard overlooking Ollerolampi (pond), Ounasjoki (river) and the hills beyond. The best thing, is that it is all for you. The main house/lodge is very homely and welcoming with traditional decorations, but modern comforts such as a full size dishwasher and (Finnish) coffee machine, and TV (which we didn't need to watch during our stay). It is a nice central hub for family meals and spending time together. The modern double showers and bathroom are in the same building. Next to the main lodge is the sleeping cabin (aitta) that has a separate bedroom with a bunk bed (wider than a normal single) and a mezzanine (parvi) with a double bed. It had a well functioning composting toilet. Between the main lodge and the sleeping cabin is a teepee (kota), which was an excellent place to spend time and cook together - we were nice and comfortable despite the cold and rain outside. It provided a truly Lappish experience to our visitors from abroad. The glass igloo was very comfortable and warm, and perfect for a couple. Unfortunately we didn't get to see the northern lights due to the rainy weather, but the views were nonetheless spectacular with the autumn colours reflected in the water. It even had its own wee toilet and Wi-Fi signal. It was also very private from the main lodge and rest of the compound. It apparently gets floated in water in summer which would be amazing, but the water level was too low during our stay. And after my mum fell in the 10c water while paddle boarding, it was maybe a good thing we could access our bedroom from dry land :). We had fun with the rowing boat, paddle boards and the canoe though. Unfortunately despite our 4 night stay, we did not have the time to heat up the sauna and jacuzzi, but that is definitely on the cards for the next stay. All the recycling and environmental aspects are well thought of and easy to use, and no hassle at all. There is plenty of parking space, and having your own transport is advisable - it is only a short drive to the city or e.g. Santa Claus village. Communication with the hosts was excellent, not that we were missing anything during our stay. This is a hidden gem just outside of Rovaniemi town that will guarantee you a relaxed and comfortable stay - without...

Read moreHaving booked a few nights in Rovaniemi itself, we decided to book 2 nights in Ollero Eco Lodge, as we liked the idea of staying in an authentic Finnish holiday home and since it is a little bit out of town, we would have a better chance of seeing the northern lights. With 3 young children (8 year old, 3 year old and 10 month old), going on a bus tour in search of the northern lights wasn't really an option for us.||We lit fires in the lappish tents, had a magical walk through the forest, the kids did lots of sledding (we adults also had a couple of goes too!) and some of us stayed up late enjoying the magical northern lights! We visited the nearby reindeer farm during our stay as well. Ollero Eco Lodge is a really special place....
